What are the responsibilities and job description for the Heavy Equipment Operator position at City of Big Spring?

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assists with landfill maintenance and operation duties by operating heavy equipment such as a backhoe, dozer, compactor, scraper, front end loader and dump truck.
- Covers refuse disposal sites with dirt on a daily basis.
- Digs trenches for refuse disposal.
- Operates baler as needed.
- Loads completed bales onto truck and unloads in disposal areas.
- Maintains baler and baler facility.
- Performs basic maintenance and repair on a daily basis to ensure that it is in proper operating condition.
- Blades slopes to remove erosion damage.
- Maintains access roads.
- Inspects all equipment prior to use to ensure that it is in proper operating condition. Performs routine maintenance on equipment such as checking fluid levels, belts, hoses, etc.
- Assists in landfill office as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School diploma or GED certificate.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Texas for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
- Knowledge of City Policies and Procedures.
- Knowledge of departmental and safety rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of the proper operation of solid waste collection and disposal equipment.
- Skill in operating a backhoe, dozer, compactor, trash truck, front end loader, and dump truck.
- Skill in basic maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Skill in using various hand tools.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
