What are the responsibilities and job description for the GIS Intern position at City of Blaine?
Under the direction and supervision of the GIS Coordinator, the GIS Intern is responsible for assisting with the needs of the GIS Division and its customers. This includes but is not limited to cartography, spatial analysis, field data collection, data entry, metadata, and web app development.
- Create and update printed maps based on request and seasonal need.
- Create web maps and apps using a combination of ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Enterprise.
- Record real-world conditions into spatial datasets via desktop software and mobile applications in the field.
- Develop surveys and data collection tools using ArcGIS Survey123 Connect and Field Maps.
- Work with non-GIS staff on data capture efforts to record work that is done based solely on institutional knowledge.
- Ability to perform in a team environment and communicate effectively with City staff, contractors, and the public.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, techniques, tools, and equipment used in geographic information science work in the office and field including: Esri ArcGIS, word processing, spreadsheets and tabular data, spatial statistics, database structures, and coordinate & projection systems.
- Ability to learn new things and apply existing knowledge on the job.
- Ability to prioritize, organize, keep detailed records, and prepare written reports.
- Ability to work analytically, independently, and make appropriate judgements.
- Ability to request guidance when needed.
- Ability to work on-site to accomplish the objectives of the position.

- Knowledge of Esri’s ArcGIS platform.
- Knowledge of GIS principles related to the technology systems, and coordinate reference systems.
- Current collegiate student or recent graduate (within the last year) with a declared major in Information Science, Geography, or a related field of study.
Based on the needs of the GIS Division and the learning objectives of the candidate, there may be additional projects available to target specific objectives that meet the needs of both. These include but are not limited to:
- Enterprise GIS development – integrating existing systems for enhanced functionality.
- Spatial Analytics – geostatistical analysis supporting a variety of City functions.
- Data Cataloging – Recording/updating metadata, caching necessary external data, centralizing records into common and accessible locations and formats.
- Publishing – Construction of ArcGIS Hub(s) and similar tools for the dissemination of data and resources internally and externally.
- 3( )D Graphics and Analysis – 3-Dimmensional, BIM, and/or spatiotemporal opportunities.
