What are the responsibilities and job description for the Adaptive Sports Instructor position at City of Bloomington, MN?
Primary Objective
Provide adaptive sports programming to ensure a successful recreation experience for participants with disabilities, under the direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor and the work direction of the Recreation Coordinator / Lead.
This position will primarily work with Adaptive Softball and Adaptive Pickleball programs, with the opportunity to contribute to other adaptive sports offerings throughout the summer.
Examples of Duties
Instructor:
- Provide on-site adaptive sports programming while teaching softball and pickleball skills.
- Encourage social interactions and sportsmanship between and among all participants.
- Complete duties such as set-up, take-down, check-in with players, preparing batting order, assigning positions, managing players, and assisting Lead as necessary.
- Complete any necessary paperwork required for position.
- Problem solve with other staff, participants, parents/guardians and supervisors.
- Work as a team member to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Minnesota Human Rights Act.
- Completes all other duties as assigned by Recreation Supervisor and Adaptive Coordinator.
Minimum/Desirable Qualifications
- Must be 15 years of age or older.
- Must be available Tuesday evenings June 10-August July 29. Also, preferably available Thursday nights June 19 - July 17. (NO PROGRAM JULY 1, 3)
- Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
- Must have willingness to learn about and support people with disabilities as they participate in City-sponsored Parks and Recreation programs.
- Must be patient and reliable.
- Currently certified in First Aid/CPR/AED or have ability to obtain.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience working with people with disabilities.
- Have basic knowledge of the skills and rules of softball and pickleball.
- High school diploma and relevant post-secondary course work preferred (therapeutic recreation, psychology, education, healthcare, etc.).
- Experience working in community recreation or education programs.
- Ability to plan and conduct recreation activities with youth and adults.
Supplemental Information
Adaptive Softball runs Tuesdays beginning on June 10th through July 29th with staff hours of 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM.
Adaptive Pickleball runs Thursdays beginning on June 19th through July 17th with staff hours of 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM.
BONUS INCENTIVES Commitment Bonus- A seasonal employee who works until at least July 29th will receive $100 bonus on their final paycheck.
Referral Bonus– A seasonal employee who refers a new seasonal employee will receive $100 bonus on their final paycheck. Referral paperwork required within one week of employees start date and both employees must be employed for the entirety of the scheduled season to be eligible.
