TEMPORARY FULL TIME - TRAILS LABORER II

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Performs trail and park maintenance duties such as trail building, surfacing and clearing. Vegetation management including grass mowing and trimming, tree cutting, brush and debris removal, material hauling, leaf raking, painting, litter pick up. Volunteer coordination and other related duties as assigned.

· Organizes and supervises volunteer trail maintenance activities

· Ensures park safety, cleanliness, and appearance

· Maintains accurate records regarding trail use, maintenance efforts and volunteer participation

· Maintains direct communication with Trail Specialists and Natural Resources Manager on a regular basis, reporting problems, maintenance needs and recommendations

· Educates volunteers about safe and proper trail maintenance techniques, supervises Adopt-a-Trail volunteers

· Follows and initiates correct procedures during emergency situations

TRAINING/SPECIAL SKILLS:

Working knowledge and skill in the safe operation of light trucks, brush cutters, push mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, power tools, hand tools, and other related grounds keeping equipment. First Aid/CPR certification required.

· Prior volunteer coordination experience desirable. Must have the ability to train, motivate, supervise and direct volunteers.

· Must be self-motivated, and have the ability to interact and work well with the public and other employees.

· Must be reliable, punctual, have the ability to follow oral and written direction, and be capable of performing physically demanding work.

· Valid Indiana driver’s license with good driving record

RESPONSIBILITY:

Employee is directly responsible for overall park maintenance, and general appearance of assigned park sites, as well as organizing and implementing volunteer activities.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Must be in excellent physical condition. Frequent bending, stooping, lifting, cutting, shoveling etc. is required. Moderate to strenuous physical effort is frequently required for extended periods of time in the lifting and loading of equipment, tools, soil, rocks, logs etc. Employee must be physically capable of lifting weights in excess of 75 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Employee performs duties outdoors, in varying weather conditions, and is periodically exposed to work sites with extreme cold and/or high temperatures and humidity. Safety precautions must be used at all times to avoid injury. Some computer and software work required.

HOURS:

Work schedule variable. Some weekends and evenings required. 20-40 hours/week, except during periods of inclement weather. Term of employment not to exceed nine months.

SALARY:

$16.42 per hour. Hourly wage based on knowledge, skills, and applicable experience. Wage reviews at scheduled intervals.
