JOB OPPORTUNITY
TEMPORARY FULL TIME - TRAIL SPECIALIST
DUTIES:
Performs trail and park maintenance duties such as trail building, surfacing and clearing. Vegetation management including grass mowing and trimming, tree cutting, brush and debris removal, material hauling, leaf raking, painting, litter pick up. Evaluating existing trails and prioritizing improvements. Volunteer coordination and other related duties as assigned.
· Organizes, performs and oversees natural surface trail maintenance activities
· Monitors park use, and informs park visitors of regulations and policies
· Ensures park safety, cleanliness, and appearance
· Inspects trails and documents trail conditions regularly
· Evaluates current trail alignments and proposes improvements
· Maintains accurate records regarding trail use, maintenance efforts and volunteer participation
· Utilize asset management software
· Maintains direct communication with Natural Resources Manager on a regular basis, reporting problems, maintenance needs and documenting trail work
· Educates and trains seasonal staff and volunteers, especially Adopt-a-Trail volunteers, about safe and proper trail maintenance techniques
· Follows and initiates correct procedures during emergency situations
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of erosion mitigation, current trail design trends, and prior experience trail building with hand tools. Working knowledge and skill in the safe operation of light trucks, compact utility vehicles, brush cutters, push mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, power tools, hand tools, and other related grounds keeping equipment. First Aid/CPR certification required.
· Prior volunteer coordination experience desirable. Must have the ability to train, motivate, supervise and direct staff and volunteers
· Must be self-motivated, and have the ability to interact and work well with the public and other employees
· Must be reliable, punctual, have the ability to follow oral and written direction, and be capable of performing physically demanding work
· General understanding of GIS software
· Valid driver’s license with good driving record
RESPONSIBILITY:
Performs trail work, plans and prioritizes trail improvements, trains and supervises staff, organizes and implements volunteer activities.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Must be in excellent physical condition. Frequent bending, stooping, lifting, cutting, shoveling etc. Moderate to strenuous physical effort is frequently required for extended periods of time in the lifting and loading of equipment, tools, soil, rocks, logs etc. Employee must be physically capable of lifting weights in excess of 75 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Employee performs duties out of doors, in varying weather conditions, and is periodically exposed to work sites with extreme cold and/or high temperatures and humidity. Safety precautions must be used at all times to avoid injury. Some computer and software work required.
HOURS:
Work schedule variable. Many weekends and evenings required. 40 hours/week, except during periods of inclement weather. Term of employment not to exceed nine months.
SALARY:
$19.33-24.00/hr. Hourly wage based on knowledge, skills, and applicable experience. Wage reviews at scheduled intervals.
