What are the responsibilities and job description for the Utility Pathways (Maintenance Worker) position at City of Bloomington?
Individual(s) will perform various types of manual labor, semi-skilled, or skilled work in the maintenance of the City’s water distribution, water treatment, and wastewater collection systems. To participate in the education programs necessary to meet the testing qualifications for Minnesota Cl-D Water and CL-SD Wastewater Operator licensure.

When assigned to the Utility Operations
- Operate, inspect and make repairs to the wastewater collection system, including lift stations
- Operate, inspect and make repairs to the water distribution infrastructure
- Install, read and repair residential and commercial meters as needed
- Assist in excavation of water and sewer repairs, including set-ups for traffic control
- Use all relevant Utilities’ computerized applications and data collection tools
- Operate trucks and other equipment (non-CDL)
- Observe safety regulations; operates vehicles and equipment in a safe and competent manner
- Perform groundskeeping and landscaping duties
- Work with or for other Public Works Divisions as assigned, including snowplowing and other maintenance activities
- Complete training programs as assigned
- Complete Utility Operator education program
- Perform other duties as apparent or assigned
When assigned to the Water Treatment Plant
- Perform routine process control analyses
- Observe safety regulations; operate vehicles and equipment in a safe and competent manner
- Use all plant control systems and data collection and retrieval tools according to standard operating procedures
- Perform cleaning, preventative maintenance and repair of water supply and treatment plant equipment
- Perform labor necessary to complete assigned tasks on various Utilities projects
- Properly collect and transport water samples and perform limited analyses
- Respond promptly, professionally and accurately to customer service calls
- Complete training programs as assigned
- Perform other duties as apparent or assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES REQUIRED
- Interest in drinking water supply, treatment technologies or wastewater collection systems
- Demonstrates ability to perform strenuous manual tasks for extended periods of time
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Valid Minnesota driver’s license
- Possess basic computer skills
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Possess a valid Minnesota Commercial Class B driver’s license with air brake and tanker endorsements
- Experience utilizing a tablet or personal computer for education or work purposes
- Experience working or interacting with culturally diverse populations
- Mechanical aptitude
- Ability to speak a second language, in addition to English that has a recognized presence in the community. (Spanish, Somali, Vietnamese, Chinese Mandarin, Cambodian, etc.)
SUPERVISION OF OTHERS
This position may provide intermittent job site instructions to contract personnel or seasonal employees.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Must maintain Water and Wastewater licenses
- Must maintain the Class B commercial driver’s license
Anticipated Hiring Range: $28.50 – $30.24 Hourly
2025 Full Salary Range: $28.50 – $38.00 Hourly
