What are the responsibilities and job description for the Plant Mechanic position at City of Boca Raton?
- Performs routine preventive maintenance work on water and wastewater systems such as pumps, motors, compressors, engines, and conveyors following suggested manufacturer and City benchmark standards;
- Installs and/or makes major repairs to plumbing systems, pumps, valves, motors, controls, gearboxes, conveyors, and compressors;
- Troubleshoots and performs repairs on gas, sludge and chemical pumping systems and related equipment used in plant operations;
- Checks wells for proper operation; checks fluid levels of wells; records flowmeter readings;
- Checks and tests pumps, motors, conveyors, compressors, and valves; monitors and replaces belts, hoses, pipe connections, lubricants;
- Performs predictive tests: infrared, temperature, vibration and laser alignment inspections on equipment used in water and wastewater operations;
- Maintains and repairs chlorine generating equipment including ammoniators;
- Maintains and repairs lime slaker system;
- Repairs and rebuilds sludge pumps; water pumps, chemical and gas pumps,
- Replaces bearings, shafts, sleeves, seals, and repair other mechanical parts;
- Field tests pumps, motors, blowers and gearboxes for functionality, efficiency and completeness of repairs;
- Completes preventive maintenance logs on Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Performs related tasks as required
RELATED TASKS:
- Inspects tanks, pumping equipment, conveyors, wells and building support systems to ensure compliance with statutory and safety requirements;
- Conducts emergency and routine repairs at various onsite and offsite pumping facilities;
Knowledge of:
- Standard practices, methods, tools, and materials of the mechanical trades;
- Carpentry, masonry, and building maintenance work and related mechanical trades operations;
- The occupational hazards connected with general maintenance operations and ability to observe and enforce appropriate safety precautions;
- General office practices and procedures
Skilled in:
- The use and care of bench and hand tools, machines, and equipment of the mechanical trades;
- The use of Microsoft Office Suite products to include Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Troubleshooting and mechanical diagnostics
- Reading comprehension – both of routine communications as well as technical manuals, diagrams, or other work-related documents
Ability to:
- Should be able to use a shovel, sledgehammer, and air hammer,
- Work a flexible work schedule that includes weekdays, weekends and evenings as needed.
- Establish and maintain effective and positive relations with City officials, associates, consultants, and the general public
- Perform essential functions and related tasks while using best judgement and application of necessary safety precautions.

- High School diploma, GED equivalency or any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school
- Four (4) years of experience in maintenance work involving plumbing and mechanical repairs, troubleshooting, and equipment installations including:
- Two (2) years of experience in preventative maintenance if mechanical systems in an industrial or manufacturing plant or a water/wastewater treatment facility is required
- State of Florida Class ‘E’ drivers license
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Abstained from the use of cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products for at least one year prior to their date of hire and shall abstain from the use of tobacco products at all times during the period of their employment with the City while both on and off duty.
Salary : $21 - $27
