Job Description:
Performs help desk and administrative duties in support of departmental functions; assists City staff with hardware and software problems; and provides administrative support in the daily office operations of the department. The work involves performing a variety of tasks and occasionally requires independent judgment, discretion, and due diligence in the performance of job duties and responsibilities, as well as sound interpretation of local, state, and federal policies and regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Receive phone calls or electronic messages from users having problems using computer software and hardware, or having trouble using specific software such as graphics, database, printing, word processing, spreadsheets, electronic mail, and operating systems; provides support for audio-visual presentation equipment.
- Composes edits and distributes department communications; oversees all website reports; researches and obtains information for routine and moderately complex reports and special assignments; maintains spreadsheets for Information Technology budget; records and backup data of expenditures.
- Supports, monitors, tests, and troubleshoots hardware and software problems pertaining to City Hall Local Area Networks (LANs) and all outside department LANs; Assists with installation and maintenance of personal computers and related peripherals and devices, software and software applications, telecommunication equipment and other electronic office equipment; analyze and resolve technical problems related to the computer needs of City departments.
- Assists users with problems by perceptive questioning, using diagnostic software, or listening to procedures followed by users to determine the source of the problem, and assists users in the proper use of computer equipment and software.
- Track computer, printer, and telecommunication products and supplies; receive and distribute supplies to appropriate parties; log supplies received and distributed, and maintain inventory of computer hardware and software.
- Follow appropriate safety and security precautions to safeguard all City assets.
- Assist Information Technology Specialist II, Network Administrator, Security Analyst, Assistant Information Technology Director, and Information Technology Director as assigned.
- May require after-hours work/weekends when necessary.
- May be required to be on-call following the probationary period.
- Serves as essential emergency personnel when required.
- Regular and prompt attendance is an essential function of the position.
- Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications:
- Education & Training: Associate degree or technical school degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent combination of progressively responsible experience of at least 2 years in information technology. Information technology experience preferred. High school graduate, or its equivalent, such as a GED.
- Knowledge of: good oral and written communication skills; and the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Intermediate to advanced level knowledge of current versions of word processing, database, spreadsheet, presentation, graphics, desktop publishing, Internet, and other available software. Knowledge of technological terminology typically encountered in an information services environment. Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods, systems, and equipment, including computers and associated equipment. Knowledge of basic arithmetic, business letter writing, report preparation, and principles and procedures of record keeping.
- Skills/Ability to: serve other City departments in a diplomatic and professional manner, exercising good emotional control; must have good interpersonal skills. Good verbal fluency and knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Ability to work with detailed information for sustained periods of time. Ability to maintain filing systems organized alphabetically, chronologically, numerically, categorically, and in a variety of formats (electronic, paper, etc.) Ability to perceptively question users, diagnose, and troubleshoot software and hardware problems. Ability to simultaneously perform a variety of technical and administrative functions and maintain a quality work product. Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision. Ability to work on multiple projects.
- Safety/Physical Requirements: work generally performed in a climate and temperature-controlled building with minimal exposure to outdoor weather conditions; sit, walk, kneel, bend at both the waist and knee, reach with the arms over the head, and hear, both on the telephone and in person, using regular conversational tones; vision requires the ability to focus and read printouts, computer, screens, and other written material. Duties may require lifting up to 70 pounds and the use of hands and fingers to perform essential functions of the job, i.e., typing, data entry, using the calculator, and operating other office equipment.
- Certifications & Licenses Required: Appropriate Texas Driver’s license. A Certification and Network Certification, and Microsoft Certification preferred.
