Job Description Summary:
Under general supervision, the Probation Officer will provide entry-level case management work. Employees perform under the supervision of the Court Navigator and spend considerable time learning the procedures and operations of the Municipal Court. Duties include, but are not limited to, interviewing, investigating, counseling, and referring clients for probation, supervising and monitoring defendants’ post-sentence, liaising with service providers, and performing related duties as required.We are seeking candidates who possess experience in motivational interviewing (MI), along with working with adults and juveniles in a criminal justice environment. These candidates should also have a passion for helping others on their path to positive change. The selected candidate will learn the job directly through comprehensive training from the current employee, guaranteeing a smooth transition.
Job Description:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Monitors defendants on probation, deferred judgments, deferred prosecutions, and other sentences.
Refers defendants to appropriate services. Monitors the defendant's progress and participation in an assigned treatment program(s).
Completes, coordinates, and maintains probation orders, deferred sentencing forms, judge’s orders of no contact /trespassing, conditions of bond, and miscellaneous judicial orders.
Maintains updated files for each defendant and enters information into the Municipal Court computer database.
Acts in response efficiently to the cancellation of warrants, writs of execution, writs of commitment, no contact orders and no trespassing orders.
Acts as a bond commissioner. assesses the accuracy of bonds submitted. Processes and maintains an accurate and detailed record of personal recognizance bonds, cash bonds, and surety bonds in accordance with state statutes.
Applies appropriate screening tools to assist in determining defendants' needs and employs assessments to determine defendants’ motivation and ability to follow through with judicial orders. Provides sentencing recommendations, as appropriate.
Acts as liaison with judges, attorneys, defendants, service providers, families, and victims.
Research criminal history by accessing various databases, including Colorado State Court Government Agency Access and NCIC/CCIC, via the Colorado Bureau of Investigation computer.
Coordinates with the court marshal and jail personnel to schedule arraignments and arrange for inmate transport, bond hearings, and trial settings. This includes scheduling judge coverage for jail courtroom and holiday on-call needs.
Perform pre-sentence assessments on certain defendants and make appropriate recommendations to the judge and city attorney.
Attend meetings and subcommittee meetings and follow up with assigned tasks from meetings.
May perform court specialist duties when coverage is needed.
Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to be patient yet able to set appropriate limits.
Ability to demonstrate strong organizational skills, effective and efficient time management skills, and excellent customer service skills within a position with inherent conflict.
Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, to work independently and manage a substantial caseload.
Ability to establish effective working relationships within the court and community.
Ability to acquire and maintain Colorado Bureau of Identification operator security number.
Ability to acquire and maintain Colorado Bureau of Investigation operator security number.
Skills in communicating with diverse populations.
Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to communicate bilingually in Spanish/English; knowledge of a language other than English.
Ability to connect with individuals with diverse backgrounds, including the ability to build trust and motivate change.
Ability to work effectively with community groups on potentially sensitive issues.

Knowledge of or previous experience as a case manager, probation officer, or other similar experience.
Knowledge of and experience with computers and word processing.
Knowledge of or proficiency in interacting successfully with homeless individuals.
Knowledge of or experience with a variety of screening tools, such as the Vulnerability Index.
Knowledge of family theory and therapy principles, homeless issues, adolescent issues, court procedures, basic legal principles of criminal law, sentencing options, interviewing and intervention techniques, addictive behavior, and treatment community referral sources.
Knowledge of and experience with NCIC/CCIC.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, or Criminal Justice
A minimum of two (2) years in a related field.
Eight (8) years of experience in a related field may for the substitute for the required education.

Physical and Mental Effort
Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits the employee to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person. Sufficient vision or other powers of observation that permits the employee to review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents and materials. Sufficient manual dexterity that permits the employee to operate computer equipment and other office equipment. Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to work in an office setting. Work may include extended periods of time viewing a computer video monitor and/ or operating a keyboard.
Work Environment
Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment. Works in a setting subject to continuous interruptions and background noises.
Machines and equipment used include, but are not limited to the following Frequently uses standard office equipment including personal computers, telephones, calculators and copy/fax machines.
