JOB SUMMARY
The purpose of this job is to assist the Financial Services Department with various governmental accounting assignments. Daily tasks may consist of preparing and processing invoices, organizing office mail, recording business transactions, managing customer accounts, as well as organizing, and verifying financial information. The completion of the Internship may consist of the creation and presentation of a financial services related assigned project.
Qualifications
ELIGIBILITY: This internship is through our community partnership with Oglethorpe University located in Brookhaven, GA. The eligibility requires current enrollment at the University at the Junior or Senior Level with a Major in Accounting.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Assist in the preparation of financial reports
- Support monthly and year-end closing processes in accordance with Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) regulations (bank reconciliations, fixed asset updates, budget to actual journal entries)
- Firsthand entry of accounts payable and accounts receivable
- Introduction to payroll management
- Help with the analysis of financial data, including budgets, expenditures, and revenues
- Maintain and reconcile government funds, grants, and capital project accounts
- Assist in the preparation of journal entries and account reconciliations
- Review and verify documentation for accuracy and compliance with City accounting policies (such as P-Cards and travel reimbursements)
- Help with audit preparation and liaise with auditors to provide necessary documentation
- Prepare reports for government compliance and other regulatory agencies
- Provide administrative support to the Finance Department team as needed
- Participate in meetings and discussions on governmental accounting best practices and emerging industry trends
- MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
- Currently enrolled in Oglethorpe University and either a rising Junior or rising Senior
- Majoring in Accounting
- Familiarity with the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) and relevant public sector regulations is a plus (or a willingness to learn)
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook)
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent attention to detail with a focus on accuracy
- Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently as well as collaborate with a team
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Experience with accounting software (Tyler System or other cloud-based accounting system) preferred
- Familiarity with financial reporting and auditing standards for the public sector
- Ability to network with other professionals in the public sector and accounting industry
