JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, performs skilled and semi-skilled duties in the maintenance and oversight of athletic fields and other landscaped areas; marks and sets playing fields to specifications; installs, repairs, and maintains irrigation systems for landscaped areas; and performs related duties as assigned.  The Supervisor performs and oversees a variety of duties in the maintenance of baseball, softball, soccer, and utility sports fields and tennis courts to ensure safe playing surfaces and regulation markings: the supervisor levels, measures, marks, and sets playing fields to meet specifications established by the sport. The supervisor also performs irrigation system maintenance and general grounds maintenance duties as assigned

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:      

• Responsible for performing tasks related to employee supervision including reviewing assigned tasks to determine, labor, material, and equipment needs.
• Assigning and acquiring equipment and materials, establishing department timelines for task completion, supervising, and directing activities of other park maintenance employees in the department by assigning daily projects and duties
• In collaboration with other Parks and Recreation Supervisory staff works to ensure departmental goals and daily operational needs are met
• Responsible for management of staff performance, attendance, and professional development
• Responsible for ensuring accurate reconciliation, timely invoicing, and adherence to departmental budgets
• Will regularly assist the Director in the management of Parks and Recreation projects including serving as project lead, managing timeframes, budgetary expenditures, data analysis, preparing reports, and collaborating with external contractors
• Maintains and cares for sports fields to ensure optimal playing conditions; schedules maintenance activities to avoid conflict with sports activity schedules; responds to requests from athletic coaches and sports leagues for the correction of field condition problems.  
• Work with staff to ensure the task of mowing athletic fields using large riding mowers; installing sod, reseeding, and fertilizing
• Oversees and renovates fields; restores fields in the off-season in preparation for organized instructional activities; inspects and monitors playing fields and tennis courts to ensure safety, resolve problems, or notify others as appropriate  
• Work with staff to measure, layout, and mark sports fields in accordance with specifications established for the sport; sets baseball/softball diamond base pegs and pitcher's mound to specification; operates drag equipment, top dressers, and sod cutters to level playing fields including regular removal of lip where turf meets infield.  
• Performs a variety of routine, semi-skilled work in the installation, operation, repair, and maintenance of irrigation systems for sports fields; inspects and services irrigation systems to ensure safe and proper operation and maintenance of fields at the proper level to ensure safe playing conditions; calibrates irrigation systems and sets irrigation clocks and timers; adjusts watering schedules according to weather; repairs sprinkler heads.  
• Oversees staff in the performance of regular grounds maintenance duties; mows, trims, edges, rakes, fertilizes, aerates, and waters flower beds, hedges, trees, and lawns; weeds, mulches, fertilizes, irrigates and sprays lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers; prunes trees, plants, and shrubs and picks up and hauls cuttings to trash bins removes landscaping, trees, shrubs, grasses and plants and re-plants as necessary; monitors health and appearance of lawns, bushes, trees and flower beds and diagnoses and treats pest, disease and weed problems.  
• Oversee the daily cleaning and maintenance of landscaped areas, paved areas, paths, and walks; sweep and vacuum sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots and perform general grounds cleaning; pick up litter, garbage, and organic debris from landscaped areas and grounds; picks up and dumps trash cans and other litter receptacles; inspects and cleans storm drains and gutters.  
• Trains and manages staff to properly mix and apply various herbicides, chemicals, and pesticides; prepares reports as required.
• May operate a variety of grounds maintenance equipment and hand tools, including mowers, trimmers, edgers, leaf blowers, power shears, chain saws, sprayers, and weed eaters; maintains and performs minor repairs and maintenance on grounds equipment, ensuring that staff are trained and equipped to do the same 
• Maintains routine records of work orders and equipment repair.  
• Performs related duties as assigned.    

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Turf Grass Management or Parks and Recreation Administration, or a closely related field and three (3) years of progressively responsible related experience and/or training in Field Maintenance Operations; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.  Must possess and maintain a valid State of Georgia driver’s license upon hire; Must possess First Aid, CPR, AED, and Lifesaving certifications through the American Red Cross (or equivalent association) within first (90) days of employment.  Must hold a category 24 Georgia Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator license or obtain within (90) ninety days of employment.

Certified Playground Safety Inspector or the ability to obtain is preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Ability to understand, follow and complete oral and/or written directions, and relate the same with contracted personnel and internally to other team members.
• Ability to multi-task assignments with concurrent deadlines and varying degrees of complexity.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports; explain rules, procedures, and processes clearly and concisely.
• Ability to communicate orally and in writing with staff members and/or supervisors and have working knowledge of appropriate technology to best serve the public
• Basic grounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking, and weeding.
• Safe work procedures in the operation of hand and power tools and equipment.  
• Cultivating, fertilizing, watering, and spraying flowers, trees, and shrubs.
• Herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals used in grounds maintenance.  
• Operation and maintenance of hand and power tools and equipment used in groundskeeping.  
• Methods and materials used in controlling pests, insects, and weeds.  
• Methods and procedures for the maintenance and upkeep of sports field turf to ensure safe and proper regulation playing conditions.
• Methods and procedures for the installation, maintenance, and repair of irrigation systems.
• Perform semi-skilled grounds maintenance duties including prioritizing and scheduling work on athletic fields and other school grounds.
• Work independently and use sound judgment in performing grounds maintenance activities.
• Measure, layout, mark, and line playing fields according to specifications for the sport
• Maintain and repair sprinklers and watering systems
• Comprehensive knowledge of sports turf management practices and operations, including multi-sport game and tournament preparation and management
• Mix and apply specialized chemicals to control and eradicate weeds, insects, and other pests
• Operate a variety of power and hand tools
• Must demonstrate the ability to operate commercial vehicles, forklifts, and other light motorized equipment including tractors, power mowers, edgers, and weed eater etc.
• Maintain routine records.

  The employee regularly works outdoors in a park and sports field setting and occasionally performs duties in a normal office environment.

• The position requires daily travel among the various COB worksites as well as vendor and merchant locations
• Willing to work overtime, weekends on call, and holidays, and may be required to assist in special events.
