What are the responsibilities and job description for the Water Safety Instructor (WSI) position at City of Brooklyn Center?
Primary responsibility is to provide water safety instruction to the Brooklyn Center Community Center pool patrons.General

Must be customer service oriented and have the ability to actively listen to others for understanding of their needs and situations; ability to speak and write English clearly. Must be able to assertively control conversations in order to quickly and accurately gather pertinent information and be able to communicate this information professionally and precisely to the proper recipient. Be able to read and understand correspondence, memoranda, and directives.
Decision Making:
Must act in a decisive manner, using good judgment. Must be able to assess problems and situations; able to anticipate needs and evaluate alternatives. Must have a knowledge of utilization of appropriate resources and the willingness to initiate use of a available resources.
Interpersonal Relationships:
Must be consistent in dealing with people; must have tact and diplomacy; must strive to promote a cooperative atmosphere in the department; must have a positive attitude.
Professional Attitude: Must have commitment to the organization; willingness to take initiative; dependability; maturity in relationships with others; and self-confidence. Must represent the organization to other agencies and citizens with a courteous, helpful, and friendly attitude.
Quality of Work:
Must be able to produce quality, accurate work, detect and correct errors, utilize work time properly and productively.
Technical Knowledge:
Must have knowledge of Red Cross passing requirements for each skill level. Must be prepared and organized for all lessons. Must have all appropriate certifications in regards to lifeguarding and must be able to perform those duties. Must have the ability to work with diverse groups.
Physical Abilities:
Must have the ability to read and discern visual images on a variety of media. Must have the ability to remain seated or standing at the same workstation for up to eight hours at a time with appropriate breaks within that time frame.
The Brooklyn Center Community Center is open 7 days a week from 8:30 a.m. - 9 p.m. At this time we are looking for candidates that can teach classes on Tuesday evenings, Wednesday evenings, Thursday evenings and Saturday morning.

- Teach skills in accordance with the American Red Cross and the Brooklyn Center Aquatics Program standards.
- Promote, teach and ensures the safety of all class participants
- Completion of all progress reports, cards and Red Cross forms before the last class.
- Enforce and follow all facility policies, rules and regulations.
- Maintain current lesson plans.
- Remain current in all certifications.
- Performs other duties as assigned or apparent

- Must be at least 15 years old
- General knowledge of all swimming strokes.
- American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification
