This is a limited duration full-time union benefited position for up to a maximum of three years to train and gain the skills and experience necessary to be a fully qualified Public Service Worker. This apprenticeship will be terminated at the end of three years if not hired into a Public Service Worker position before that time.
Under the direction of the divisional Field Supervisors and Lead Workers, this position supports the Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Department and provides for the operation, repair, and maintenance of the City's streets, parks, water, sanitary and storm sewer systems and other associated infrastructures. Provides high levels of customer service to both internal and external customers.
High school graduate or equivalent.

- Performs general maintenance and repairs to all City infrastructures and departments.
- Performs snow and ice control operations on streets, parking lots, sidewalks, trails.
- Performs routine landscaping maintenance in parks, trails and boulevards.
- Provide assistance with vehicle and equipment maintenance, repairs & seasonal changeover.
- Receive and respond to requests and work orders.
- Follow up on concerns and other matters of public interest related to the city infrastructure, services and maintenance.
- Provide assistance in emergency or essential operations to all O&M divisions including parks, streets, and utility maintenance. divisions, and other City Departments.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
High school graduate or equivalent.
Experience
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Aptitude or experience in general maintenance.
- Valid driver's license at time of hire.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Experience with general building maintenance.
- Ability to perform minor repairs on landscaping equipment and other maintenance equipment.
- Knowledge of safety protocols.
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools and equipment related to the position.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions, such as plans, safety instructions, manuals.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to problem solve to fix minor maintenance challenges.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public courteously and tactfully.
- Ability to follow and promote safe work practices.
- Ability to provide a level of customer service that meets or exceeds customer expectation and satisfaction.

Desired Qualifications
Additional preferred qualifications include.
- Valid driver's license with the ability to obtain a Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsement with appropriate training.
- Previous experience working with diverse populations.
- Fluency in Spanish, Hmong, Russian, Somali, Laotian or Vietnamese language(s).
Working Conditions
- Prolonged periods of standing, bending, sitting, stooping, kneeling, climbing
- Office environment; exposure to computer screens; working closely with others, frequent interruptions.
- Must be able to lift and carry or otherwise move 10 to 50 pounds regularly/occasionally.
- Work is performed in various conditions indoor and outdoor.
Anticipated Work Schedule
Work hours are generally within 6:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., and determined based on assigned division. Work week schedule may include an 8 or 10 hour days on Saturday and Sunday, if assigned.
