Job Summary

The Lead Equipment Operator III is responsible for operating complex heavy equipment necessary in the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of facilities. The Lead Equipment Operator III is responsible for crew leadership, routine maintenance procedures, safe and effective loading and operation, and storage. Must be able to problem solve and identify disciplinary problems. The Lead Equipment Operator III works within a general outline of work to perform; develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

Key Functions/Knowledge/Skills

  • More specialized skills in a particular type of work; knowledge of an extensive body rules, procedures, or operations; specialized skills that may be technical such as ability to operate dangerous or very large/complex equipment.
  • Operates specialized equipment, machinery, or vehicles, such as heavy construction vehicles trucks with hydraulic pumping equipment, pressure sprayers, paving equipment, jackhammers, backhoes, or cranes.
  • Assign operational duties to equipment operators.
  • Assist with employee evaluations, identifying disciplinary problems and directing special work assignments.
  • Assist in compliance with all City, State and Federal regulations.
  • Operates light equipment and tools, such as blowers, edging tools, sprayers, shovels, rakes, and brooms.
  • Removes debris, litter, earth, or pavement; loads material into trucks; locates and excavates underground structures or pipelines set poles; clears land or mows grassy areas, such as parks, playgrounds, medians, roadsides, and hillsides.
  • Repairs existing system, and structures, such as water, sewer, or gas mains, fire hydrants, roadways, or buildings; clears obstructions from pipelines; repairs or clean structures, and surfaces, including removing graffiti.
  • Inspects equipment to ensure safe operations.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on all equipment and tools.
  • Assembles and loads equipment, tools, materials and supplies according to daily work assignments.
  • Follows established safety rules and regulations for the safe operation of equipment and machinery, reports accidents, equipment breakage and unsafe conditions to a supervisor.
  • Determines amount and type of materials, equipment and/or tools necessary to complete task; assigns work; supervises and instructs others.
  • Completes routine documents and forms, such as work orders, repair requests, reports, and logs.
  • Perform other elated duties as assigned.

Minimum Education & Experience

High school graduation or GED plus one year of experience.

Special Certifications & Licenses

Valid Texas Driver’s License.

Independence & Judgement

Proficient level of judgment with planning, leading, organizing, recognizing, and resolving issues or problems; requires very little supervision.

Initiative & Ingenuity

General guidelines: occasionally requires interpretation of available options to apply to non-standard situations; day-to-day work drives priorities.

Supervisory & Responsibility

Lead person in small work group; does not specifically assign work but is looked to for guidance.

Financial Responsibility

Does not deal with money.

Level & Frequency of Outside Contact

Direct contact may be infrequent but may require considerable tact and courtesy when it does occur.

Physical Demands

Mostly moderate and fairly steady active physical exertion; may require brief periods of heavy muscular exertion, such as standing, lifting, moving, pulling, pushing, etc. ability to exert up to 50lbs. of force occasionally to move objects.

Responsibility for Equipment & Property

Responsible for high-risk or value items such as big, expensive equipment, including light and heavy machinery.

Working Conditions

Frequent exposure to outdoor elements; job often (several times per week) exposes person to physical danger; serious space problems; frequent situations that can cause stress and tension in the execution of regular duties.

Other Requirements
