Job Summary
Responsible for daily operations and supervision of lifeguards and patrons at a City of Bryan swimming pool. Performs all lifeguard responsibilities including monitoring pool activities, enforcing facility rules, responding quickly to emergency situations, administering first aid, and performing water rescues as needed. Serves as the manager on duty when a supervisor is not present.
Essential Job Functions
- Performs all lifeguard responsibilities including monitoring pool activities, performing water rescues, and performing first aid or CPR when needed.
- Ensures that swimmers are well supervised in the pool and on decks.
- Acts immediately and appropriately to secure the safety of patrons in the event of an emergency.
- Assists in orienting new lifeguards to job duties and responsibilities.
- Acts as a role model to other staff by demonstrating high standards of personal conduct.
- Assists in planning and conducting in-service training to ensure lifeguards are fully competent in first aid, CPR, and all water rescue techniques.
- Ensures lifeguards perform in accordance with established safety regulations and policies.
- Keeps supervisor well informed of pool maintenance needs including cleaning, chemical adjustments and repairs; perform pool maintenance as necessary and how trained by Supervisor.
- Serves as the primary point of contact for patron disputes.
- Communicates with other lifeguards and facility staff about the need for additional assistance or equipment in an emergency.
- Delivers excellent customer service to all patrons.
- Observes, enforces, and educates patrons about the rules and regulations of the facility.
- Ensures timely completion of required inspections and reports and submits them to the proper person or office.
- Maintains a clean, safe, and sanitary facility.
- Maintains appropriate fitness level to perform all essential functions of the position.
- Continually practices safe work habits and alerts management about safety and other workplace concerns.
- Reports for duty at the times specified and ensures a high standard of personal presentation and appearance is maintained per policy.
- Attends mandatory training, orientations, and other staff meetings as scheduled.
- Adheres to the policies, rules, regulations, and procedures of the City of Bryan and the Parks and Recreation Department.
- Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Required:
- High School Diploma/GED.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must possess at least two (2) years of lifeguarding or closely related experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Practices and techniques of water safety.
- Practices and techniques of pool maintenance.
Ability to:
- Maintain fitness level (swimming, strength, and endurance) to successfully perform all position responsibilities, including the ability to pull significant weight through water.
- Remain watchful and alert at all times while on duty.
- React quickly and calmly in emergencies.
- Observe and analyze situations quickly and objectively and, using good judgment, determine an effective and efficient course of action to be taken with due regard to the task, hazards, situation, and circumstance.
- Communicate effectively with patrons, supervisors, and other employees.
- Demonstrate regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
- Comply with all City and departmental administrative directives, policies, and procedures.
- Work effectively as an individual and as a team member.
- Be constantly alert and aware of the hazards involved and apply safety practices and principles in reporting and preventing accidents.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and communicate effectively with the public and other required entities.
Skills:
- Strong leadership skills.
- Excellent swimming skills, plus skill in rescue techniques and procedures, first aid application, and resuscitation.
Licenses, Certifications & Special Requirements
Must possess the following certifications:
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification
- American Red Cross Training Certification in Community First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer
Physical Demands
Physical demands include but are not limited to: swimming, sitting, talking, hearing, seeing, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, bending, crawling, climbing, balancing, using hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment, and lifting, carrying, and/or moving people and objects of varying weight. The type of work involves extreme care, concentration, fitness, and manual dexterity.
Must possess the ability to swim distances and dive to pool depths, as determined by testing/certification authorities, and to lift 150 pounds or heavier weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment.

Working Conditions
Work is performed in an outdoor swimming pool environment. There is exposure to various depths of water, slippery surfaces, wet and humid conditions, extreme temperatures, heights (up to 35 feet), noise, pool and cleaning chemicals, body fluids while rendering first aid and CPR, dust, pollen, and other airborne particles.
Equipment
Work shall be performed with tools, appliances, and equipment approved by those agencies and bodies that have control, authority, or approval of the design working ranges or limitations of those items; the employee has the responsibility to conform to those ranges and limitations.
