The City of Buena Park is looking for a Maintenance Helper in the Public Works Department, Facilities Division. This is an entry-level position that offers on-the-job training in a variety of skills including building maintenance and construction work. GENERAL PURPOSE
 
Under close supervision, performs basic unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, monitoring, and repair of city streets, buildings, parks, parkways, landscaped areas, medians, and facilities; and does related work as required.
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
 
The Maintenance Helper performs assigned maintenance tasks in support of daily activities. As compared with the Maintenance Worker, the Maintenance Helper receives greater supervision, performs tasks of lesser difficulty, and operates power equipment on a limited basis. The Senior Maintenance Helper is differentiated from the Maintenance Helper in that it can perform more tasks independently.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the class.
 
All Operations
  1. Maintains a safe work environment ensuring all jobs and tasks are performed in a safe manner by following established operating practices and safety procedures. 
  2. Maintains and conducts minor repairs of buildings, grounds, and equipment; performs minor mechanical, carpentry, painting, and electrical work, as assigned. 
  3. Loads and unloads tools and supplies; picks up and hauls away debris; places and removes traffic control signs, cones, and road delineators, as needed. 
  4. Operates pick up trucks, service vehicles, and small mowers; uses hand and power tools at worksites. 
  5. Assists with traffic control setup and take down. 
  6. Sweeps and cleans work areas. 
  7. Completes basic work records and attends job and safety meetings. 
  8. Assists in setting up and breaking down equipment and areas for special events.
Facilities
  1. Assist in basic repairs and maintenance to indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures in city buildings and parking areas. 
  2. Make repairs to wall surfaces and offices; prepares offices for painting and applies primers, paint, or other protective finishes to city facilities.
  3. Clean and maintain roof drains, gutters, flat roof surfaces and outside mechanical room areas from leaves and debris.
  4. Safely operate a wide variety of equipment and tools including table saws, compound miter saws, drill press, band saws, belt sanders, and hand operated tools.
  5. Maintains and organizes work areas to ensure a clean and safe work environment. 
  6. Maintains and cleans assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES
 
Knowledge of:
 
General maintenance and repair methods and techniques; equipment operation procedures and proper use of hand and power tools; safety rules and practices pertaining to maintenance and construction work; effective customer service techniques.
 
Ability to:
 
Learn and effectively perform maintenance and repair tasks given position assignment; operate small-scale equipment and power and hand tools in performing maintenance work; perform assigned maintenance tasks and follow proper safety rules and procedures; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and management; understand and carry out oral or written instructions; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
 
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

Physical Demands
 
While performing the duties of this class, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach above and below shoulder level with hands and arms. The position primarily works in field settings. The employee must be able to sit, stand, and walk. The employee must be able to talk and hear. The employee is expected to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, climb, and crawl, depending upon work tasks, and to lift up to 50 pounds given materials moved and tools used or move heavier objects with the assistance of co-workers or mechanized devices.  
 
Specific vision abilities required by this class include close vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
 
Mental Demands
 
While performing the duties of this class, the employee must be able to follow policies and procedures; use basic math; learn and apply new information or new skills; work under deadlines with interruptions; and interact with city staff, management, contractors, vendors, and the public.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS
 
The employee constantly works outdoors and is subject to variable weather conditions and traffic, heat, dust, moisture and wetness as well as mechanical and electrical hazards, and applied chemicals. The employee is subject to loud construction noise in particular areas such as power tools, compressors, chippers, and large-scale motorized equipment. The employee may work in vaults and underground storage chambers. The employee must be available for on-call, stand-by, and emergency call service.
High School graduation or G.E.D. equivalent is required. Six months of general maintenance and custodial experience involving parks, landscaping, medians, and/or buildings and facilities is desirable. Experience within a specified field related to the position is highly desirable.
Valid Class C California driver license, acceptable driving record, and evidence of insurance are required.
TENTATIVE TESTING SCHEDULE
WRITTEN EXAM: March 19, 2025
ORAL EXAM: April 10, 2025

Physical Examination:
Employment offers are conditional based, upon the successful completion of a medical examination which may include drug and alcohol screening. Physicals are performed by the City's designated physician at the City's expense.
