Work Schedule: 4 day workweek (Monday - Thursday), 6 am - 4:30 pm


Summary Description: To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of City streets, parks, facilities and vehicles. 

This is the entry-level class in the Facilities Maintenance Worker series. The Facilities Maintenance Worker I class is distinguished from the II level by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to the II level. Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to general supervision as procedures and processes of assigned area of responsibility are learned.

 Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform street maintenance duties; operate construction and maintenance equipment such as trucks, tractors and skip loaders for a variety of construction and maintenance operations involving streets, sidewalks and gutters.
  • Patrol an assigned area locating potholes; spread asphalt to patch and repair streets.
  • Use concrete cutting and breaking equipment; operate a jackhammer; pour and finish concrete; construct concrete forms and perform rough carpentry work.
  • Set up traffic safety devices such as cones, signs and barricades as necessary. 
  • Perform emergency street, sewer, storm drain or other public service maintenance work as required.
  • Assist in maintaining catch basin and storm drain pipes.
  • Participate in the removal of graffiti including sandblasting, chemically cleaning and painting surfaces.
  • Paint and stripe barricades and guard rails; cut and prepare stencils for traffic directional markings including crosswalks, safety loading zones, bus stops, parking and center lines and railroad and school crossings.
  • Prepare and maintain athletic fields and related facilities; clean restrooms and pick up litter around parks.
  • Perform routine plumbing repairs such as unstopping toilets, sinks or urinals, fixing water leaks, leaking faucets, and water fountains.
  • Perform routine electrical repairs such as changing light bulbs or fluorescent lamps and assist in replacing ballasts.
  • Perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of the City’s irrigation system; water, mow, weed, trim, renovate and fertilize lawns; prune trees and shrubs; plant trees, flowers and shrubs.
  • Service automotive equipment with gasoline and oil, keep records of amounts, perform service calls; make temporary repairs, pick up and deliver vehicles to outside garages; pick up parts; road test vehicles to insure proper operation.
  • Troubleshoot minor maintenance problems involving electrical, structural, plumbing, and equipment repair or replacement. 
  • Clean and wash motorized equipment; steam clean engines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE

  • Hazards associated with the work and proper safety precautions.
  • Traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in truck and equipment operations.
  • Safe driving principles and practices.

ABILITIES/SKILLS

  • Perform unskilled tasks in a variety of construction, maintenance and repair activities.
  • Learn the uses and purposes of general construction, maintenance and repair tools and equipment as utilized in assigned area of work.
  • Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Learn methods, techniques and procedures related to parks, street and vehicle maintenance.
  • Learn skilled tasks in street, park and vehicle maintenance.
  • Learn purposes and uses of a variety of vehicles, equipment, power tools and hand tools including motorized, pneumatic and hydraulic equipment.
  • Work safely and adhere to principles of safety when working near traffic or in other environments.
  • Establish, maintain and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

EXPERIENCE/TRAINING/EDUCATION

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

  • One (1) year of experience performing general construction or maintenance work is desirable.
  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATE

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid California driver's license.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to be called out for emergency repair and maintenance duties.
  • Willingness to work variable hours including nights, weekends and/or holidays and be on standby/on call for 2 week rotations for emergency call outs.
  • May require pushing, pulling, dragging and lifting equipment and/or office items weighing 25 lbs. or more.
  • Ability to hear and convey detailed or important instructions or information verbally and accurately.
  • Average visual acuity to prepare and read documents.
  • Ability to communicate with both the public and co-workers in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to travel to different sites and locations.
  • Exposure to outdoor conditions and inclement weather.
  • Ability to climb extension ladders, work on roofs, platforms, scissor lifts and boom lifts.

Successful candidates will be placed on the employment eligible list from which hires may be made. The list is valid for up to one year, unless exhausted sooner.
 Once an employment offer has been made, all candidates will participate in a confidential background investigation, have their fingerprints reviewed by the Department of Justice and be required to take a pre-employment medical exam which may include a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.
