The Burlington Police Department is a nationally accredited law enforcement agency that is committed to quality fair and professional police services. The agency is made up of more than 100 sworn officers and 50 professional staff members serving the City of Burlington, North Carolina.
What you will do:
Performs clerical duties including but not limited to taking reports, data entry and customer service for the City’s Police Department. They are responsible for daily review of departmental crime reports, submission of crime reports to the state, and the timely gathering of information needed for reports of minor crimes. Work in this position is mostly sedentary, with frequent attention to computer screens and phone systems.

Takes information from victims over the telephone, in-person, or via video call for investigative reports. Reviews incident reports, arrest reports, citations, and supplemental reports for accuracy and error. Submits crime reports to the state and FBI. Enters data into computer including criminal arrest sheets, traffic citations, traffic stop reports, incident reports, supplemental reports, and NCIC entries. Supports, maintains, and is involved with the department’s clean data initiative. Manages, assigns, and monitors eWarrants (North Carolina Warrant Repository). Assists with the fingerprinting process for Burlington residents who are seeking employment or for individuals seeking employment within our jurisdiction. Assists officers and the District Attorney’s office with obtaining the necessary documentation for court. Disseminates DMV 349’s (crash reports) to the appropriate agencies. Assists the public, insurance companies, and related entities with DMV-349 information. Obtains and disseminates information for the department’s statistical purposes. Receives and properly handles Felony Notes and other departmental documents. Receives mail/packages and distributes to the proper personnel. Performs related duties as required.
General knowledge of police reporting systems, including data entry, storage, and retrieval General knowledge of computer based operating systems General knowledge and techniques used in data collection, cleaning, reporting, and analysis General knowledge of the geography of the City of Burlington and surrounding area General knowledge of departmental policies and procedures General knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances pertaining to police operational and investigative procedures Ability to learn, use, and demonstrate the National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS) Demonstrated ability to prepare a narrative that flows and can be used in court Demonstrated ability to prepare clear and concise reports which accurately reflects data Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with coworkers, other city employees, and the public Demonstrated ability to display tact and courtesy in dealing with customers and the public Demonstrated ability to listen and have strong written & oral communication skills
High School Diploma or GED Equivalency Minimum of one year of work experience in office assistance, customer service, law enforcement, data entry or a related field supplemented by word processing and computer courses An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the position may also be considered. Valid North Carolina Driver’s License
Two years or more of work experience in a law enforcement environment or writing and generating reports of any kind
- Work in this class is described as sedentary and seldom requires much physical exertion to complete tasks.
- Work typically involves the ability to physically perform the basic life operational functions of kneeling, standing, walking, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
- Work necessitates visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned in preparing and analyzing figures, accounting, reviewing, computer terminal viewing and extensive reading.
