What you will do:
This role involves performing semi-skilled and skilled labor to maintain parks and facilities for the Recreation and Parks Department. Responsibilities include grounds and building maintenance, inspecting and maintaining playgrounds, amusement rides, and aquatic systems. The employee operates various tools and equipment, working both indoors and outdoors, with exposure to hazards like loud noise, machinery, electrical currents, and chemicals.Landscaping and Maintenance
- Perform diverse tasks in landscaping, maintenance, and repair of City parks and facilities.
- Operate hand tools, power tools, lawn equipment, tractors, City vehicles, and specialized equipment as needed.
- Inspect and maintain amusement park rides to ensure compliance with NCDOL codes and regulations for safe operations.
- Maintain and repair city playgrounds to meet ASTM and CPSC safety guidelines for children.
- Assist in the maintenance and repair of aquatic filtration and pump systems for City pools and splash parks.
- Support custodial teams to ensure all Recreation facilities are cleaned and supplied daily.
- Assemble and disassemble tables, chairs, and event equipment for special events at City parks and facilities.
- Complete assigned tasks and work orders from the supervisor.
- Perform trash cleanup and general cleaning in parks.
- Work during inclement weather to manage storm cleanup, snow and ice removal, or debris clearing as required.
- Participate in a rotating on-call weekly schedule.
- Work occasional nights and weekends to support City operations and events.
- Execute related tasks as assigned to support the overall functionality and safety of City parks and facilities.
- Broad understanding of building construction and maintenance principles.
- Familiarity with standards, practices, tools, materials, and equipment used in building and landscaping maintenance.
- Knowledgeable in basic electrical, carpentry, plumbing, and custodial practices.
- Skilled in using standard hand tools and operating light equipment for various tasks.
- Awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions relevant to the work environment.
- Capable of working independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high productivity.
- Strong ability to comprehend and follow detailed oral and written instructions.
- Adept at establishing positive relationships with colleagues and the general public.
- Courteous and professional in responding to citizens and addressing concerns.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalency and some work experience in construction, building maintenance, repair of park grounds and facilities, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid North Carolina Driver’s License
- Work in this class is described as strenuous using a negligible amount of force occasionally to move objects and complete tasks.
- An employee must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
- Work necessitates visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned.
