GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of tasks related to the maintenance, repair, and improvement of City parks, athletic complexes, and/or Rolling Hills Conference Center.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
1. Mows and maintains park and open space areas including athletic fields; trim, edge, and weed as required.
2. Plants and maintains lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers.
3. Rakes and cleans City parks and open spaces; removes litter and debris.
4. Drags and lines playing fields; prepares and resets ball fields as needed.
5. Performs duties needed for the seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering, and the pest and weed control of City parks and open spaces.
6. Performs building maintenance duties such as painting, changing air filters, general plumbing repairs, minor electrical work, etc.
7. Opens and closes facilities as needed.
8. Operates tractors, mowers, hand operated equipment and specialized turf care equipment as needed.
9. Performs custodial work such as cleaning floors, cleaning restrooms and replenishing supplies.
10. Maintains irrigation systems and waters fields and public areas as needed.
11. Assists in setting up and taking down equipment for various park and recreation programs, prepares facilities for park and recreation program use.
12. Responds to emergency and special event clean-ups.
13. Assists with special projects, including construction-related projects, as required.
14. Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of self and others.
15. Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning shop and work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; notifies supervisor of needed repairs.
16. Communicates with supervisor, co-workers, vendors, suppliers, citizens, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures, and relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations

- Knowledge of safety procedure, practices, and equipment
- Knowledge of lawn care maintenance
- Skill in measuring and setting up sports fields
- Skill in operating assigned equipment
- Ability to exercise sound judgment within the scope of responsibility
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the public
- Must be able to meet regular attendance requirements
- Must be able to be works nights and weekends
- Must be able to drive to assigned locations
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Six months of experience or training in landscaping, groundskeeping, equipment operation, or similar; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Alabama driver license.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The physical activities required for this position involve: Frequent standing, walking, pushing, pulling, reaching, stooping, crouching, kneeling, climbing, talking, and hearing.
This position requires lifting: Up to 50 pounds frequently; up to and over 100 pounds occasionally.
This position has the following special vision requirements: Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
The following environmental conditions and hazards may be encountered while working in this position: Extreme heat and cold, outdoor weather conditions, vibration, fumes, toxic chemicals, and loud noise. This position is required to occasionally work in close proximity to moving machinery/equipment and alongside moving traffic on roads.
