JOB SUMMARY
The Deputy Director works under the general administrative supervision of the Director of building and Zoning and in accordance with applicable provisions of the bylaws. Duties include examining building plans to ensure compliance with building codes, regulations, and standards. Must have thorough knowledge of accepted requirements for building construction, fire prevention, light ventilation, and safe egress; ability to enforce and Interpret regulations such as state and city building codes, local zoning by law firmly, tactfully, and impartially. Also, work Is performed under typical office conditions. This position is required to occasionally work outside of business hours. Maybe required to work on weekends and contacted at any time to respond to important situations and emergencies.
Applicant Qualifications
- Minimum associate degree in communication administration or a related field with experience.
- Excellent communication skills and customer service.
- Reliable and dependable team player.
- Self-motivator.
- Knowledge of property code, maintenance, flood, and zoning, which may include structure outside of work to adequately perform.
- Efficient in Microsoft Word, internet, and Excel.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Operate vehicle with a valid Driver's License

- At least 3 years of supervision of Building Construction and Zoning
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSBILIES
- Review plans for building construction or alteration to determine compliance with state building codes. Participates In the plan review process boards, committees, commissions, interacts with all development Boards providing guidance and assistance and attending relevant meetings and or hearings to assist with Information and or resolution of Issues when required
- Issues certificates of Inspection, certificates of occupancy notices, notice of violations and stop work orders.
- Investigates all complaints pertaining to construction and use or occupancy of all buildings and takes appropriate enforcement action including issuance of all necessary notices, fillings when complaints are verified; prepares documents when needed.
- Acts on any question relating to mode or manner of construction and zoning.
- Responds to inquiries from property owners, banks, attorneys, real estate firms, surveyors, architects, zoning, engineers, city officials and the public; explains building code regulations and by-law provisions.
- Assist with supervising and coordinates all building and zoning issuing rental and pos violations. Pertaining to construction or alteration of buildings in the city: monitors workflow, assigns staff to projects, evaluates staff efforts, assists staff in answering questions and responds to inquires referred by staff, i.e., difficult, problematic and or usual issues.
- Ability to exercise independent Judgement on a variety of complex, highly responsible routine and substantial nonroutine work requiring creative ability to problem solve. Ability to analyze and clearly communicate and document findings for decision-makers. Ability to establish relationships with City officials and governmental representatives. Ability to manage several projects a one time.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, aptitude for working with people and maintaining effective working relationships.
- Ability to perform the duties of the job, frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use of hands, and handle different objects for lifting.
- Responsible for the supervision of the general staff and inspectors in solving departmental management Issues as it relates to Job assignments, personnel issues, and to track completion of tasks and review submittals. Works with Union officials to resolve any outstanding union issues that arise as a result of the work performed in the divisions.
PREFERRED SKILLS
Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with management, coworkers, and residents. Certified Building inspector/Commissioner and knowledge of ADA Work with City Engineer.
