Position Overview

Do you love books, organizing information, and helping people find what they need? Come work for Canby Public Library, along with our dedicated team! This is a part time, 20 hour per week position with a tentative Monday (8am-1pm), Tuesday (2-7pm), Wednesday (2-7pm), and Friday (8am-1pm) work schedule.

The Library Assistant II is responsible for providing lead work coordination and direct customer service in library service delivery, maintenance and programs. Employees in this classification assist with training, and monitoring of staff and volunteers, provide direct assistance to customers in the delivery of a variety of library services and programs, as well as coordinate and perform other routine duties under the direction of a librarian or supervisor.

This position will primarily be assisting with circulation (check in / out materials, process transactions, sort / retrieve materials), customer service duties at the library reference desk, and other assistance to customers in the delivery of a variety of library services.

The Library Assistant II is distinguished from the Library Assistant due to lead work duties, and higher-level responsibility to coordinate and support more complex aspects of library operations.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervision of other employees is not a responsibility of this classification. Employees in this classification provide support as lead for library assistants and volunteers.

Duties and Responsibilities

The individual in this position is expected to engage in the following work-related activities.

  • Connect customers with library products, services, materials and events. Answer and resolve questions about services and accounts, and provide information, directions, referrals, and routine reference and readers' advisory.
  • Coordinate and lead routine operations of a unit of the library; schedule, train and assist employees and volunteers.
  • Assist with service delivery of routine library functions on location and offsite, including assignment to locations or programs that focus on services to specific audiences.
  • Use automated library systems to fulfill requests from customers. Check materials in / out, retrieve, sort and transfer materials to other libraries.
  • Assess, collect, calculate, record, and reconcile fines and fees following standard library protocols and procedures.
  • Perform a variety of clerical tasks such as : maintain supplies and inventory; prepare outgoing mail and packages; process and distribute mail and other deliveries; and facilitate bookings of public meeting rooms.
  • Develop, plan, and implement programs and events.
  • Process new library materials. Make minor repairs to books and other materials.
  • Provide technical direction to support the work of volunteers.
  • Assist with social media and other types of marketing tools.
  • Assist with evaluation and maintenance of library materials and other resources.
  • Perform a variety of tasks that support the acquisition of library materials.
  • Participate in work groups, project teams, task forces and committees as assigned.
  • Collect and prepare data for reports, statistical materials, or other records as needed.
  • Assist with opening or closing tasks.
  • Act as a resource, provide guidance, and assist with training of other staff and volunteers.
  • Follow and report issues or concerns following established library practices and procedures regarding general aspects of maintenance, appearance, customer behaviors, safety and security. Responsible for building and staff in absence of librarian or supervisor.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment, WiFi and software.
  • Perform all work of lower library classifications as needed.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

  • Job Qualification Requirements

    Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • Three years of experience in library services, customer service, office work or other related area with some lead experience
  • Or any satisfactory combination of education, experience, and training that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the above duties.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a library environment.
  • Associates degree or higher.
  • Bilingual in Spanish.

    Moderate : Duties involve lifting, carrying, stacking, and moving materials weighing up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and / or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 10 pounds of force constantly. Perform tasks that may require the incumbent to balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, use manual dexterity, perform repetitive motions, grasp, and feel with or without reasonable accommodations. Visual acuity necessary to perform an activity such as : preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; expansive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts and / or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and / or assembly of fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.

    Everyday Risks / Discomforts : Work is performed indoors in an office environment, however, occasional offsite assignments or events outside library facilities may be required.

    SUMMARY OF BENEFITS FOR AFSCME REPRESENTED EMPLOYEES

    Benefits are pro-rated for part time employees working 20-39 hours a week)

    Effective July 1, 2022

    Retirement : The City of Canby participates in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) and Oregon Public Service Retirement Plan (OPSRP). The City pays the employees share of 6% of employee's salary into the plan. The City participates in the PERS Sick Leave Provision and reports accrued / unused sick leave to PERS after the sick leave retirement benefit has been calculated (refer to Sick Leave).

    Deferred Compensation : The City offers several options for participation in a 457 deferred comp plan. Participation is voluntary and contributions are made by the employee.

    Vacation : Paid vacation is based on length of service (the accrual rate per pay period is the annual rate divided by the total number of pay periods). All regular employees who have been employed with the City for at least six (6) months are eligible for vacation benefits. The maximum vacation accrual limit is 280 hours.

    1-3 years 80 hours annually

    4-8 years 120 hours annually

    9-13 years 160 hours annually

    14 years 200 hours annually

    Comp Time : Employees may elect additional time off from work in lieu of payment for overtime work performed. Maximum accrual allowed is sixty (60) hours.

    Longevity : Employees become eligible for longevity pay in the amount of one and a half

    percent (1.5%) of the base salary after completing ten (10) years of continuous

    employment with the City of Canby. Employees become eligible for longevity pay in the

    amount of two percent (2%) of their base salary after completing 20 years of continuous

    employment with the City.

    Holidays : Employees are compensated for 12 holidays per year.

    Sick Leave : Employees earn ninety six (96) hours of sick leave annually (the accrual rate per pay period is the annual rate divided by the total number of pay periods). Upon retirement under the City's retirement plan, an employee shall be compensated for fifty percent (50%) of his / her accumulated but unused sick leave. The number of hours of sick leave for which compensation is provided shall not exceed five hundred (500). Funeral Leave : In the event of a death in the employee's immediate family, employee is entitled leave of absence with pay up to three (3) working days as may be necessary. The employee's immediate family shall include the employee's spouse, ex-spouse, child(ren), step-children, parent(s), brother(s), step-brothers, sister(s), step-sisters, grandparent(s), father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, aunts, uncles and grandchildren.

    Family Medical Leave : The City will allow employees to take family and medical leave in accordance with State and Federal law. An employee shall utilize all accrued paid leave in excess of sixty (60) hours prior to taking unpaid leave.

    Health & Welfare : Refer to Collective Bargaining Agreement for current language regarding health insurance benefits. See rate sheet for current employee contribution amounts.

    Disability Benefits :

  • Workers Compensation - All employees are covered by Worker's Compensation. This type of insurance covers employees in case of on-the-job injuries or job-related illnesses.
  • Life Insurance - The City provides life insurance in the amount of one and one-half (1 ½) times an employee's annual salary (maximum $150,000).
  • AD&D - The City provides Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance in the amount of one and one-half (1 ½) times an employee's annual salary (maximum $150,000).
  • LTD - The City provides a program of long term disability insurance.
  • Supplemental Life Options and Short Term Disability - Available for purchase by employee. City does not contribute.
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA) : An FSA allows an employee to set aside a portion of earnings to pay for qualified medical or dependent care expenses. Money deducted from an employee's pay into an FSA is not subject to payroll taxes. An employee can carryover up to $500 into the next year without losing the funds. Participation in flexible spending benefit is voluntary and the City does not contribute.

    AFLAC : Optional benefits are available. The City does not contribute.
