SUMMARY
Under supervision of the Street and Solid Waste Department Superintendent and / or Foreman,
Maintenance Worker I performs tasks related to functions of the Street and Solid Waste Departments.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Job duties and responsibilities include, but shall not be limited to the following. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.
Equipment operations:
Maintenance Worker I, with appropriate training, operates heavy equipment, including front-end loader, skid loader, backhoe, dump trucks, street sweeper, maintainer and sanitation trucks. Applicant shall be able to work with basic hand tools, power tools, chain saws, weed-eaters and mowing equipment. Applicant will assist with the operation of specialized equipment such as pothole patching machine, brush chipper, brick saws and cutting and welding equipment. Applicant must be capable of operating equipment and vehicles safely at all times. All safety procedures must be followed at all times.
Street department functions:
A Maintenance Worker I must exhibit the ability to work in a team environment under the direction of the Superintendent, Foreman, or Maintenance Worker II in performing the following:
1) Assist in all types of pavement repairs utilizing pothole patching machine and hot mix asphalt. Perform brick street repairs.
3) Assists with concrete form and finishing work, including flatwork, curb and gutter, and structures.
2) Performs alley and street repairs utilizing front-end loaders, maintainer, dump trucks and compaction equipment.
3) Must be familiar with alley and street repair procedures to avoid damage to City utility systems such as water valve boxes, meter boxes and sewer manholes. Care should also be exercised to avoid damage to private utilities including gas, electric, telephone and cable television.
4) Assists in the maintenance of City owned rights-of-way (mowing, cutting weeds, etc.).
5) Assists in maintaining drainage channels and structures.
6) Installs, maintains, and repairs all types of temporary and permanent traffic control devices, including street and traffic signs, traffic signals and striping.
7) Assists with equipment routine service and repair work. Assists in maintaining buildings in the Street and Solid Waste Departments.
8) Participates in making day-to-day decisions and judgments regarding tasks performed. Frequently deals with the citizens of Canyon and must maintain a courteous and professional relationship with the public.
9) Adheres to all department safety procedures when loading, hauling and utilizing all heavy equipment.
10) Applicant must be familiar with the use and maintenance of all safety related and personal protective equipment.
Solid Waste department functions:
A Maintenance Worker I must exhibit the ability to work in a team environment under the direction of the Superintendent, Foreman, or Maintenance Worker II in performing the following:
- Applicant must be capable of learning and running all residential and commercial solid waste routes as scheduled. This involves the operation and maintenance of a solid waste truck.
- Assists other drivers in completion of their routes as needed.
- Completes junk, bulky item and brush chipping routes as scheduled.
- Assists in performing scheduled and breakdown service and repair work.
5) Performs repair of dumpsters utilizing basic hand tools.
6) Applicant must be familiar with the use and maintenance of all safety related and personal protective equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential task and responsibility satisfactorily as approved by the Street and Solid Waste Superintendent and / or Foreman and / or crew leader. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High School diploma or general education degree (GED) is required and a copy must be must be in the applicants personnel file.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Applicant must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally utilizing verbal and written skills is also required.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Must be capable of acquiring the skills to utilize basic math formulas to calculate volumes and areas when needed to calculate hot mix, rap and concrete quantities needed to perform assigned jobs.
REASONING ABILITY
The Maintenance Worker I shall be capable of logically analyzing situations to make decisions based on experience, knowledge, and education that are beneficial to the City and to the customers. He / She shall be capable of recognizing and responding to work related issues as well as health and safety issues concerning employees and the citizens of Canyon.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Class A CDL driver's license.
Optional as required by supervisor: Eligible to obtain TCOLE basic jailers certification. TDA pesticide applicators license (vector)
TDA herbicide applicators license.
EPA 608 Type 1 refrigerant recovery certification PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms. Climbing of steps and ladders is required. The employee should possess sound speech and hearing. Complete vision abilities will be required including adequate close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. The employee could be required to engage in rigorous physical activity. The employee shall be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions including extreme heat / cold. The employee is frequently exposed to moving, heavy and mechanical equipment. The employee is occasionally exposed to potentially dangerous environments, including but not limited to, cutting, welding, vibration, heights, moving equipment electrical shock, fumes or airborne particles and extreme weather. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud. Duties are also performed frequently in heavy traffic.
All workplace safety responsibilities including shop, vehicle, equipment and traffic safety and wearing of personal protective equipment will be required at all times.
