Located in Urbana, IL, METCAD 9-1-1 is the primary Public Safety Answering Point and multijurisdictional consolidated dispatch center serving citizens, law enforcement, and fire agencies in Champaign County, IL.
Responsibilities of Position
The Telecommunicator Supervisor is part of a team of three supervisors who together oversee the day-to-day operations of the 9-1-1 communications center. They plan, direct, and evaluate the work of front-line emergency call takers and dispatchers and prepare work schedules to maintain adequate staffing levels. They are subject matter experts on and ensure compliance with METCAD’s operating procedures, statutory and regulatory guidance relating to emergency communications, and applicable labor agreements. The Telecommunicator Supervisor also keeps operational resources updated, responds to requests for information, investigates and follows up on inquiries and complaints; and assists with troubleshooting specialized dispatch-related equipment and software. Supervisory tasks include training newly hired telecommunications staff and facilitating career progression at METCAD for telecommunicators. The Telecommunicator Supervisor works an assigned shift that may be subject to change and may be required to occasionally report to the METCAD facility outside of regularly assigned hours to respond to an emergency event.Required Qualifications
• Education equivalent to a high school diploma.
• Extensive, progressively responsible experience as an emergency telecommunicator that includes emergency call taking and dispatching training.
• Supervisory experience that demonstrates the ability to plan and manage the work of subordinate staff.
• Ability to effectively communicate with upset, emotional, and irate individuals.
• Ability to prepare and maintain a variety of files and records.
• Ability to work with limited supervision and guidance.
• Ability to work well in a team environment.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain after hire and maintain, certification and/or licensure in Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD), Illinois Law Enforcement Agency Data System (LEADS), Communication Training Officer, and NIMS (National Incident Management System) courses 100 and 700.
Preferred Qualifications
• Associate degree in business administration, information technology, or related field.
• Experience in leading and administering training programs.
• Experience in providing performance feedback to subordinates.
Drug screening, psychological evaluation, criminal history record check, and background investigation will be required.
