Business/Work Hours: Monday-Friday, 6:30 AM - 2:30 PM
Starting Pay Rate: $12.00/hour

General Description

This position supports a variety of community, recreational, cultural, and special event programs hosted by the City of Charleston. It is designed for youth ages 16-20 and is supervised under established procedures.

The program employment period is from June 2, 2025 to August 8, 2025, with potential extensions based on departmental needs and employee availability.

Responsibilities, Tasks, and Projects

• Picking up litter in public areas

• Weeding, mulching, and plant maintenance

• Operating landscaping equipment such as:

  • Weed trimmers

  • Lawn mowers

  • Leaf blowers

• Collecting and changing trash bags

• Performing other manual labor duties as assigned

Candidate Requirements

• Must be at least 16 years of age

• Must have reliable transportation to and from work

• Ability to:

  • Lift up to 60 pounds

  • Walk for 6 hours per day

  • Kneel, bend, and perform physical tasks comfortably

  • Work outdoors in hot and rainy weather conditions

• Must bring own lunch, sunscreen, and insect repellent

Dress Code

Employees must wear clothing appropriate for manual labor:

• Boots or durable sneakers

• Long jeans or work pants

• T-shirts (long or short sleeved) with no political or inappropriate graphics/text

• High-visibility safety vest will be provided by Public Grounds

Additional Qualifications

• Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.

• Must be proficient in reading and speaking English to:

  • Follow safety instructions

  • Interact with coworkers and supervisors

• Must comply with all City of Charleston guidelines, policies, and procedures
