General Summary
The City of Charlottesville is seeking candidates to be considered for Groundskeeper (Maintenance Specialist I) who are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesville's Core Values of Commitment, Integrity, Respect, Innovation, and Collaboration.
The preferred hiring range for this position is between $18.00 - $19.29 Hourly ($37,440.00 - $40,123.20 Annually). As of March 28, 2024, this position is in the Labor and Trades bargaining unit in accordance with the City's Collective Bargaining Ordinance (Ordinance No. 22-128). Starting pay for this position is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. Future wage adjustments are subject to terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement between the City and the exclusive bargaining representative. The parties are in the process of negotiating the collective bargaining agreement, which will take effect on July 1, 2025.
Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This is a full-time, non-exempt, position. This Maintenance Specialist I position is responsible for functioning as a team member performing mowing, fertilization, aeration, leaf removal, invasive and perimeter brush control, and snow removal. The position is key to maintaining an extremely effective team that follows defined schedules requiring skilled labor with a high level of responsibility. Positions in this class are responsible for the maintenance, construction, or landscape / horticultural duties in city parks, downtown mall, schools, right-of-ways and public recreational facilities. Position may also perform construction / repair projects, park maintenance / renovations, tree planting / maintenance, and athletic field maintenance. Performs other duties as assigned. May have supervisory duties. Reports to the Unit Supervisor, Crew Leader, or other first line supervisor.

HEAVY WORK : Ability to lift up to 100 lbs. occasionally and / or up to 50 lbs. frequently and / or up to 20 lbs. constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
This position may be required to work weekends, nights, holidays, standy-by / on-call, emergency on-call, and / or weather-related emergency on-call.
This is a safety sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing for pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident and random testing.

Employee only coverage : $2.50 bi-weekly; Dependent coverage also available at differing rates.

3. RETIREMENT : The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS. There are certain provisions that must be met and the portability request must be executed within 18 months of vesting in the City's Plan.

A Defined Benefit Pension plan pays a monthly benefit in retirement using a defined formula based on the employee's earnings history, tenure of service, and age. Our plan has a 5 year vesting period and an employee contribution of 5% of salary.
