What are the responsibilities and job description for the Building Maintenance Mechanic II or III position at City of Charlottesville?
Support the Department of Public Works in their mission to provide professional public works services to manage natural and built systems, and foster community health, safety, and sustainability. This position is in the Facilities Maintenance Division and may be assigned to either a HVAC or Electrical Crew.
This position may be filled as a Building Maintenance Mechanic II or as a Building Maintenance Mechanic III depending on qualifications.
The preferred hiring range for a Building Maintenance Mechanic II or III is between $19.00 - $24.00 Hourly ($39,520.00 - $49,920.00 Annually). As of March 28, 2024, this position is in the Labor and Trades bargaining unit in accordance with the City’s Collective Bargaining Ordinance (Ordinance No. 22-128). Starting pay for this position is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. Future wage adjustments are subject to terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement between the City and the exclusive bargaining representative. The parties are in the process of negotiating the collective bargaining agreement, which will take effect on July 1, 2025.This is a full-time, non-exempt, position which provides excellent benefits including 13 paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, City's retirement options, gym membership reimbursement, and continuing education/training opportunities.

- The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS and there are certain provisions that must be met. - Inspecting HVAC equipment and facilities to find the source of a problem and making required corrections and tests for satisfactory and safe operation;
- Inspecting building systems such as HVAC and electrical equipment;
- Installing, maintaining and making general repairs to mechanical equipment on an emergency or scheduled basis;
- Installing and maintaining electronic control systems; participating in approved training programs to develop skill sets for advancement to higher or improved levels of competency;
- Maintaining records of work performed;
- Performing related tasks as required.

- Completion of high school, vocational school or GED required;
- A minimum of 2 years experience as an Electrician or HVAC Technician is required.

- Satisfactory health condition in order to meet the physical requirements of the job.
- Completion of a vocational training program in the Electrical/HVAC trade with demonstrated ability in servicing, maintaining and repairing mechanical equipment is strongly preferred.
Building Maintenance Mechanic III Minimum Qualifications:
- Completion of high school, vocational school or GED required.
- Extensive experience as a HVAC technician or Electrician, supplemented by course work in the field also required.
- Completion of a vocational training program in the HVAC or Electrical trade with demonstrated ability in servicing, maintaining and repairing mechanical equipment is required.
- A Master license in HVAC or Electrical is required OR a minimum 4 years experience as a HVAC Technician or as an Electrician.

- Depending on placement, requires EPA Refrigerant Certification by employment start date.
- Satisfactory health condition in order to meet the physical requirements of the job.
Position may require employees to work a flexible schedule including evening and weekends. This position is subject to supporting weather and/or other emergency events and performing stand-by or on-call.
