The primary responsibilities of groundskeeper is maintenance, repair and construction of Athletic and recreational facilities.
The majority of the work performed by the groundskeeper will include lining and dragging athletic fields, mowing, trash collection, filling holes, repairing bleachers/ benches/ goals/ etc. related to City sports programs such as baseball, softball, field hockey, lacrosse, volleyball, soccer, tennis and football, basketball outdoor and indoor facilities for program use, and provide logistical support for sporting and recreational events throughout the city.
Other related duties for the groundskeeper will include but are not limited to:
Provides exceptional customer service, responds to citizen requests and inquires, as directed by supervisor, that meets the expectations of the City’s Customer Service Initiative.
Performs responsible skilled and semi-skilled work in repair, maintenance and care of grounds, structures, irrigation systems, recreational, safety and other related equipment at City and school, recreational facilities, grounds and athletic fields.
Prepares athletic fields for various sporting events and programs throughout the City that includes lining, dragging, grading, leveling and determining appropriate layout dimensions that comply with VHSL standards for football, softball, soccer, lacrosse, field hockey and other sports activities, which includes proper set-up of recreational and safety equipment.
Mowing grounds, landscaping, fertilization, aeration, pruning, trimming, and removing various types of vegetation. Provides support of overall turf management. Performs carpentry work on shelters, roofs, benches, signs, recreational equipment, fences and posts. Trash and debris removal. Custodial duties to include cleaning bathrooms, floors, and trash pick-up and disposal.
Operates various lawn and garden equipment, City vehicles, common hand and power tools associated with grounds keeping, housekeeping, landscaping and building maintenance. Operates tractor with attachments, lift and carry up to 50 pounds, climb, bend, stoop move furniture and equipment in buildings and shelters.
Monitors and inspects areas for safety hazards and repairs; reports any deficiencies. Performs routine safety inspections on equipment, vehicles and trailers; promptly reports damages, safety concerns and malfunctions to supervisor.
Provides logistical support for City sponsored functions and special events; set-up and breakdown tents, fencing, barricades, and other various recreational and sound equipment, perform post event activities such as clean-up and trash removal.
Reports during emergency operations and may be called upon for inclement weather activities such as snow and ice removal, down tree removal and clearing debris.
Pick-up and deliver supplies and materials as directed.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requires high school diploma, GED, OR specialized vocational training.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
- Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with the City Driving Standards.
- Ability to obtain a pesticide certification within 6 months of employment.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
None.
Previous work experience in athletic fields, landscaping, and/or facility operations.
Knowledgeable of methods, tools and equipment used in the repair and general maintenance of grounds and facilities.
Ability to work MOST weekends and some holidays as needed.
