Schedule: *Varies, as needed for scheduled games
Certifications/Licenses Required: Minimum age: 16 years of age for officials
SUMMARY
The City of Chicopee’s Recreation Department is hiring a Baseball/Softball Umpire who will monitor and officiate youth baseball/softball games.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES INCLUDE:
- Arrive on site 15 mins before the schedule game start time.
- Greet and introduce self to both teams coaches.
- Inspect players for appropriate gear - rubber cleats, uniform shirts, and other protective gear as required by division. Check bats for compliance with division rules only if raised as an issue or observed.
- Hold a pre-game meeting by the mound with team captains to clarify any questions, boundary lines, and determine starting sides.
- Monitor play for excessive roughness, rule violations, Make all calls including strikes, balls, outs, fouls fairly for both teams.
- Provide instruction to players and coaches at lower divisions as seems appropriate.
- Follow the play physically along base paths or in the field so as to have a good view of the action.
- Maintain a positive and professional demeanor in all situations especially when others are becoming agitated. Address remarks to coaches rather than fans.
- You are the one person in control of the game. You decide if the game needs to stop due rain, thunder, rough play, as well as; player, coach or spectator behavior or other concerns.
- Must provide a report by phone, or in writing if requested, of any player coach or spectator whose behavior is un-sportsman like, is asked to leave the field or is disruptive of the game.
- Must complete application, interview and provide school approved work papers and all requested documents.
- Attend mandatory baseball or softball officials training.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum age: 16 years of age for officials. – Required
- Experience playing baseball or softball in recreation leagues or trained as a physical education teacher or in a related area sufficiently to be knowledgeable of the rules of baseball or softball at the youth level.
- Experience engaging children in play or sports in a positive manner.
