Youth Baseball Umpire

Description : The West Springfield Park & Recreation Department seeks qualified individuals to fill Baseball Umpire positions for youth leagues. Baseball Umpires will officiate recreational youth baseball games in accordance to the various league rules. The umpire will talk with each coach before the game and review any ground rules, unusual circumstances or local field hazards. The umpire will make sure all players are in proper uniform and notify the coach if any problems need to be rectified.

Examples of Duties

Officiates youth baseball games and enforce league rules.
Arrives fifteen (15) minutes prior to the scheduled game time.
Talks with each coach before the game and reviews any ground rules, unusual circumstances or local field hazards.
Verifies that all players are in proper uniform and notifies the coach if any problems need to be rectified.
Checks all equipment and the field for safety hazards.
Remains unbiased during the umpiring contest and avoids verbal contact with spectators.
Approaches the position as a representative of the West Springfield Park & Recreation Department, displaying respect for the facility, participants, parents and co-workers.
Keeps track of game time, scores and outs
Submits reports as required and keeps records
Responsible to the Recreation Supervisor, and directly to the Umpire-In-Chief and / or Baseball League Coordinator

Qualifications

Strong knowledge of the game and baseball rules

Ability to take the initiative to do the work that needs to be done

Ability to work independently

Self-motivator and good decision making skills

Ability to crouch for lengthy periods during officiating

Ability to work outdoors in all kinds of weather

Ability to deal with public diplomatically and respectfully

Minimum Age Requirements : Anyone 14 years of age and older as of April 27, 2025. Adult / Child teams are encouraged and welcomed. Adults are strongly encouraged to apply as well.

Supplemental Information

Shift : Weeknights (after 5 : 30pm) & occasional weekends. This position is seasonal (April through June).

Salary : The salary range for this position is $30.00 per game (Leagues : Grades 2, 3-4, 5-6) and $45 per game (League : Grades 7-9).

This position is not eligible for benefits.
