Position Description
ENTRY SALARY :
Code Inspector I : $55,240.50
Code Inspector II : $59,128.87
POSITION OPEN UNTIL FILLED
Under limited direction, the Code Inspector I / II oversees and performs complex and technical work to enforce codes, ordinances, and regulations in connection with the City's Code of Ordinances and Community Development Code.
Currently recruiting for one (1) general code compliance inspector and one (1) housing inspector.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions : Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following :
- Schedules, performs, and completes inspections of private property, limited public areas; coordinates reviews to determine if there are any violations of city ordinances.
- Identifies areas of noncompliance, communicates with owners or agents, and posts legal notices.
- Utilizes expertise and experience to advise staff on various enforcement processes.
- Assists in the training and interpretations of code for staff as needed.
- Coordinates and assists as needed in the preparation of cases for the Municipal Code Enforcement Board, Special Magistrate, or Circuit Court of Pinellas County.
- Works with other divisions within the department and city to ensure consistency and accuracy with cases.
- Assists in the preparation of division reports and policies.
- Tracks and coordinates information to ensure accuracy and professional enforcement protocols are followed.
- Attends hearings, staff meetings, and neighborhood / homeowner and business association meetings as needed to discuss enforcement activities.
- Provides training and education for inspectors and other staff. Coordinates with supervisor on recommended division training.
- Monitors violations; tracks allotted time for compliance and ensures all corrections are made within that timeframe; completes re-inspections; makes follow-up calls and engages with the owners to ensure corrections are made; closes cases when all conditions are met and files appropriate documents with the records department.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

A valid State driver's license is required.

Education and Experience :
Code Inspector I :
High School Diploma, High School Equivalency or G.E.D. Certificate AND two (2) years of experience in code enforcement, investigations, inspections, or other relevant governmental work; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
Code Inspector II :
High School Diploma, High School Equivalency, or G.E.D. Certificate AND three (3) years of experience in code enforcement and investigations, as an inspector enforcing international property maintenance, public nuisance or land use codes with a governmental agency; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
