What are the responsibilities and job description for the Aquatics Lifeguard position at City of Clive (IA)?
Under the direct supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, or Aquatic Facilities Manager, performs a wide variety of procedures necessary to ensure the safety of the aquatic center patrons. Job entails scanning area of coverage, rotating with other guards, cleaning duties as assigned, working required shifts, supervising young children, teens, and adult patrons, enforcing facility rules and policies, and engaging in effective communication with facility patrons.
Examples of Essential Job Functions
- To ensure the safety of all facility patrons and program participants through alertness and firm, yet courteous and consistent enforcement of pool rules.
- To be prepared at all times to rescue, resuscitate and give first aid to any patron or staff at the facility.
- To be familiar with all locations of safety equipment and emergency action plans and how both are administered.
- Know and enforce all pool rules and regulations by using common sense, consistency, and sound judgement. Knowledge of the proper use of the facility plan for rule infractions and discipline procedures.
- Know the guard procedures and policies and the assignments of each guarding position.
- Wear the staff uniform while on duty, including a whistle, sunglasses and sunscreen.
- Regular attendance and the ability to work evenings, weekends, and aquatic events/rentals as needed for this position.
Other Job Functions
- Attends all orientation and training meetings as required.
- Performs other duties as apparent or assigned.
Lifeguards shall:
- Be exceptionally watchful of swimmers under, on, and around the surface of the water
- Keep continuous surveillance of the assigned area
- Keep eyes on the pool while communicating with patrons
- Sitting or standing upright in an alert and professional manner when at the lifeguard station
- Keep communication signals clear and audible
- Be on duty at the start time of the shift
- Change stations properly, communicating any special situations or concerns
- Adhere to and enforce all facility rules and policies
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to think logically and follow written, verbal, or diagrammatic instructions using several abstract or concrete variables.
- Ability to follow instructions and directives.
- Knowledge of the facility and the safety procedures used.
- Knowledge of general lifeguard practices.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with superiors, co-workers, and the public: ability to tactfully handle a wide array of social situations.
- Ability to perform all job duties safely and in accordance with applicable rules, guidelines, policies and trainings.

Physical Characteristics of the Job
Medium work requiring the exertion of up to fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally and up to twenty-five (25) pounds of force frequently.
Environmental Characteristics
The work is performed both inside and outside and includes seasonal exposure to heat and cold. The work may expose the employee to unpleasant social situations, significant work pace pressures and at times irregular work hours.
