What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Works Maintenance I position at City of Clive (IA)?
Temporary work, 100-115 days maximum employment in any one (1) calendar year. Under the direct supervision of a Public Works Supervisor, performs a wide variety of functions necessary to maintain City-owned infrastructures, facilities, and roadways. The job entails routine maintenance of infrastructures, facilities, and roadways including pothole patching, tarring of City streets, painting of fire hydrants, concrete replacement and repair of streets and intakes, litter control, and facility cleaning.
Must be 18 years or older at hire date. Projected start date 06/02/2025.Examples of Essential Job Functions:
- Maintains and repairs streets, rights-of-way including patching, paving, replacing and removing curbs and sidewalks, joint and crack sealing, and debris removal.
- Participates in the painting of pavement markings on roadways and parking lots.
- Constructs, repairs, and cleans intakes, grates, storm sewers, and other drainage facilities.
- Cleans tools and equipment after use and stores them in appropriate locations.
- Attends safety training as required
- May be required to assist as directed with other divisions or other city departments’ activities.
- Assist other personnel as directed in the operation and maintenance of the collection system, equipment, and other related appurtenances.
- Provides assistance and support in city emergencies.
- Drives and operates one (1) ton or smaller pickup trucks.
- Operates small engine motorized equipment with various attachments.
- Operates and climbs ladders used in maintenance activities.
- Sets and resets posts and replace or add new signs.
- Clean, prep, and paint fire hydrants.
- Performs construction work using a variety of materials; performs a variety of grounds, facility, infrastructure, and other general maintenance activities.
- Collects and disposes of refuse along the right of ways, parks, or city-owned buildings
- Performs all duties in a manner consistent with proper safety policies and procedures.
- Maintains records related to equipment and materials used and other job activities.
- Wear only the provided Type 2 or Type 3 high-visibility clothing
- Shall possess a valid Driver’s License
- Regular attendance is essential to this position.

Education, Training, and Experience:
Education Required:
Continued education in High School or above.
Experience Preferred:
Work in general construction and maintenance.
Other Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must have and be able to demonstrate knowledge of safe equipment operating practices.
- All staff should have good communication skills, show initiative, be dependable, show enthusiasm, and have the desire to serve the public.

Environmental Characteristics:
The work is performed primarily outside and includes seasonal exposure to cold, heat, wind, rain, snow, and other weather conditions. The worker is also exposed to awkward or confining workspace, darkness or poor lighting, dirt/dust, fumes/odors, moving machinery, noise, vibration, visual strain, wetness/humidity, working on uneven ground, mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, and traffic hazards. Also, the work may expose the employee to unpleasant social situations, significant work pace pressure, and irregular work hours.
