What are the responsibilities and job description for the CATS Transit Driver position at City of Clovis, NM?
This position requires the operation of large buses, mid-buses or vans to transport passengers in a safe, prompt and courteous manner. This position normally works 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Schedule will be determined by the public's demand for transportation service and will change accordingly. May be required to work some weekends and evenings. This position contingent upon continued grant funding.
This position has been classified as a DOT position and is subject to our drug testing policy to include pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident for the following prohibited substances: marijuana, amphetamines, opioids, phencyclidine (PCP), and cocaine, as well as any drug not approved for medical use by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Typical Duties:
- Attend in-service safety briefings and training sessions.
- Attend all in-state training sessions to become certified in Passenger Assistance and Safety, Wheelchair Securement, Evacuation Procedures, Blood borne Pathogens, Dealing with Difficult Passengers, etc. and other courses required by NMDOT and the City of Clovis.
- Must be able to assess each passenger's situation and determine the level of assistance needed and safely provide assistance with boarding and alighting.
- Receive and log fares as established by policy.
- Maintain driver's log and records as required.
- Complete and log thorough pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections, reporting all deficiencies.
- Provide light preventative vehicle maintenance.
- Maintain good customer relations.
- Staff dispatch desk in the absence of dispatcher.
- Learn 10 codes and proper mobile radio techniques.
- Maintain the appearance of the vehicle inside and outside.
- Assist with building custodial duties as needed
- Maintain professional personal appearance by caring for and wearing uniforms properly.
- Maintain exceptional customer service at all times.
- Provide all transportation services in a safe and secure manner.

Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED.
Licenses and Certificates:
- Equivalent or higher of a New Mexico Class “D” driver’s licenses, with a good driving record.
- Defensive Driving Certification or be able to obtain within 3 months.
- CPR/First Aid Certification or be able to obtain within 3 months.
- Other certifications as required by NMDOT.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- 10 codes and proper mobile radio techniques.
- The city grid/streets to enable efficient routing.
Skill in:
- Pre trip inspections and preventative maintenance vehicle checks.
- Computers and skills, & good customer relations.
Ability to:
- Pass a DOT physical
- Ability to assess passenger’s situations and determine needs
- Operate vans/buses over a designated route or in response to dispatched calls.
- Maintain driver’s log and records as required.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to sit, stand, walk, push, pull, and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds.
- Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Clovis policies.
- This is a “Safety Sensitive” position and passing a DOT drug test is a condition of employment.
