The Public Safety IT Technician performs professional and technical duties involving research, trouble-shooting, analysis, testing and development to support the various software and equipment within the Police and Fire Department. The position provides technical support for existing and new databases and systems, repairs equipment, trains end users, assists with video usage, and installs and supports all end user information technology hardware and software. Work is performed under the supervision of an Administrative Sergeant but there is considerable latitude for independent judgment and decision-making. The job requires a High School Diploma or GED, with an Associate’s Degree preferred in Information Technology; and two (2) years’ experience supporting complex technology systems. An IT Technician does not supervise, but may be required to train new employees in the same or similar job.
Must be able to pass a very comprehensive background investigation. (illustrative only and may vary by assignment)
- Daily administration of software such as records management systems, scheduling software, digital evidence retention system;
- Maintains, supports and updates all aspects of mobile desktop terminal workstations and a variety of peripherals;
- Coordinates with numerous vendors that supply technology and support;
- Provides technical support and training to department employees;
- Develops projects which involve software and computer interconnectivity;
- Assist with technical aspects of video analysis, video capture and surveillance cameras;
- Installs, maintains and supports all end user information technology hardware and software, including PDs, monitors, and peripherals, under the direction of the Information Systems Division;
- Plans, coordinates and implements upgrades to existing resources and systems;
- Relocates computer equipment as needed;
- Keeps abreast of current developments in the field through continuing education, professional reading, participation in conferences, workshops and professional groups;
- Responds to management's, supervisor's, co-workers' and citizens' questions and comments in a courteous, thorough and timely manner;
- Performs time management and scheduling functions, meets deadlines, and sets project priorities;
- Maintains strict confidentiality of all matters;
- Assists other department and City employees as needed or requested.
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Associate’s Degree or advanced technical training in computer science is required;
- Two (2) years’ experience in computer maintenance, help desk work, supporting complex technology systems, or related work is required; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position may be considered.
