What are the responsibilities and job description for the GIS Intern (PTNB) position at City of College Station?
Assists in the development and support of the GIS; helps GIS Staff in creating and maintaining spatial data; performs data integration, map creation, and maintenance of an enterprise-wide GIS; assembles source materials, enters graphic and attribute data. Hours: Up to 20 hours/week.
The goal of the internship is to provide experiential learning in the technical, organizational and practical work of geographic information systems (GIS) datasets and maps.
- Support for GIS projects.
- Creation and maintenance of documentation / metadata.
- Creation of cartographic products.
- Cartographic assistance to City staff and outside customers.
- Perform other tasks as may be assigned to carry out the mission of GIS.
Required:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent; and currently enrolled in an accredited college/university and majoring in Geography, Urban Planning, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or related field. Must possess a basic knowledge of GIS and ESRI suite of products. Must possess and maintain a valid Texas driver’s license and satisfactory driving record as specified by the City of College Station. Excellent communication and interpersonal relations skills required to work with all levels of personnel within the organization. Ability to manage multiple projects efficiently.
Preferred:
Experience with databases, spreadsheets, and coding (Access, Excel, Python, etc. Familiarity with mapping, surveying, and engineering principles and practices as applied to municipal systems.
Additional Criminal Background Screening Required: In addition to the standard pre-employment criminal background check, individuals receiving a conditional offer for this position shall be subject to a finger-print based background screening due to the required access to secured buildings and/or secure data systems.
