POSITION REQUIRES SHIFT WORK AND IS A CIVILIAN UNIFORMED POSITION:
Under the general supervision of the supervisor [of assigned division], the Police Assistant applies knowledge of Texas laws, city ordinances, police procedures, and criminal behavior to provide administrative support to the division, to include clerical support duties; preparing and submitting police reports; conducting research and providing analysis; presenting programs to civic organizations; and assisting with criminal investigations.
Additional voluntary assignment for this position may include, Crime Scene Technician Assistant, requiring availability for rotating on-call schedule. Serving in the capacity of Crime Scene Technician Assistant [under direction of the supervisor in charge] this positon performs major crime scene processing activities, including but not limited to, evidence processing and collection activities, crime scene searches, taking notes and photographs and performing other related duties as assigned.
- Interact with community members to include taking offense or incident reports and deploying to safe locations to collect information or evidence.
- Establish and maintain files of reports, bulletins, and other related data.
- Complete monthly vehicle inspections.
- Assist in criminal investigations and conduct follow-up investigations on incidents requiring Police Department involvement.
- Prepare, develop, submit and maintain statistical and written report(s) as required.
- Assist in preparation and implementation of training that may include physical activity.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required: High school diploma or GED equivalent and two (2) years of progressive administrative experience or, an equivalent combination of education and experience
Valid Texas Driver’s License
Intermediate level computer skills in the use of word processing and data entry and spreadsheets
Excellent oral and written communication skills, to include strong public speaking skills
Ability to deal with public relations problems and complaints in a courteous and tactful manner
Ability to make judgments based upon knowledge of department policies and procedures
Must not currently be or have been within the last ten (10) years on court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense of the grade of a Class B misdemeanor or above; May not have been convicted of an offense of the grade of a Class B misdemeanor or above within the last ten (10) years; and May not have been, at any time, convicted of a felony offense or any family violence offense
Preferred: Experience working for a law enforcement agency in an administrative capacity
Knowledge geographical information systems (GIS), the latest Microsoft Windows operating system and Microsoft Office Professional Suite, Publisher and Photoshop
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Drug Screening: Due to the safety and/or security sensitive nature of this position, individuals shall be subject to pre-employment or pre-placement drug and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy.

*A conditional offer of employment will have been made before the drug screen is administered. The expected duration of the application process is 60-90 days. Those successfully completing the selection process will be placed on an eligibility list for 6 months. After 6 months, the applicant must reapply.
