About the Job: In this position, you will work in a variety of roles, including natural resource management, avian surveys, wildlife surveys, vegetation surveys and mapping, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), park maintenance, and resources and safety patrols.

Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday 5:30 am 4 pm
Work Location: 1401 Glen Ave, Colorado Springs, CO
This is a seasonal (at-will) position with benefits limited to those required by applicable state and federal laws, which include Worker's Compensation, Medicare, Unemployment Insurance, and PERA (Public Employees' Retirement Association).
Approximate dates of employment will be March 2025 - October 2025. Scheduled hours will vary based on department needs. Total hours worked will not exceed 1,500 annually.
As a Biological Technician, You Will
Physical Demands: This position requires the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and to stand, stoop, walk long distances, climb, bend, and lift up to 60 pounds frequently.

As a Biological Technician, You Will
- Conduct avian point count surveys for breeding birds; survey wildlife populations
- Create and/or update maps of noxious weed species using GPS and GIS
- Follow integrated weed management plans for each property, including mowing, cutting, applying herbicide, and introducing biological controls
- Participate in trail construction, improvement, and restoration projects
- Lead volunteer events, including biological surveys, weed removal/surveys, cleanups, trail construction, and restoration projects
- Prepare reports on resource issues, visitor surveys, and other park projects
- Answer visitor questions and provide assistance when needed
- Report evidence of unauthorized camping; remove items if directed by supervisor
- Maintain trailheads and parking areas on TOPS properties, including mowing, trimming, weeding ornamental plantings, picking up litter, emptying trash receptacles, cleaning restrooms, and clearing pavement
- Knowledge of GPS and GIS units and software
- Knowledge of Colorado bird and wildlife species
- Ability to identify Colorado bird species by sight and sound
- Ability to follow scientific protocols
- Ability to learn plant species identification
- Ability to create maps using GIS
- Ability to communicate and interact with volunteers and the public
- Ability to safely operate equipment such as trucks, tractors, mowers, string trimmers, and various hand and power tools
- Have college-level coursework in biology, natural resources, wildlife biology, or related field
- Possess and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver's license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
- Experience conducting avian point counts
- Experience following strict scientific protocols
- Experience using GPS and GIS technology
- Experience identifying and controlling invasive plants
