    DESCRIPTION :

    Under general supervision of the Fire Captain, perform the full array of duties and responsibilities assigned to classes in the Fire Engineer classification, including the operation and maintenance of a variety of fire apparatus and firefighting equipment : participate in firefighting activities, fire prevention inspections, and fire training; perform mechanical maintenance on vehicles, equipment and apparatus; demonstrate a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; occasionally assist in the training of lower level fire suppression positions : perform a variety of other tasks in support of assigned area of responsibility.

    DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS :

    The Fire Engineer is the journey-level class responsible for the operation and general maintenance of firefighting apparatus, equipment, vehicles, and tools. This classification is distinguished from the next lower classification of Firefighter by the driving of fire apparatus and vehicles and the operation of apparatus, equipment, and tools at an emergency scene, serving as Fire Captain as assigned.

    SUPERVISION EXERCISED :

    Exercises technical supervision over other firefighters for operating and general maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and apparatus.

    Essential Functions

    EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Perform the full array of duties including driving fire-pumping apparatus to alarms and operating pumps at an emergency scene; regulate water pressure through hose lines; operate and oversee the use of numerous types of vehicles, equipment, tools, and apparatus; operate resuscitators, inhalators and perform first aid; operate radio equipment.
  • Inspect vehicles, equipment, and apparatus; perform general maintenance and minor repair work; identify the need for major repairs; maintain records of maintenance and overhauls.
  • Perform the duties of a Firefighter when pump is not being used at an emergency scene.
  • Demonstrate a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties.
  • Keep a current knowledge of the City geographic layout and the water system.
  • Participate in drills and other training activities.
  • Participate in station maintenance and repair work; refill fire extinguishers.
  • Respond to questions and concerns from the general public; provide information as is appropriate and resolve complaints.
  • Participate in public education programs in fire suppression and fire prevention.
  • Work a variety of shifts including weekends and holidays; be available for emergency call- back when off duty.
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Qualifications

    TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE :

    A typical way to obtain this knowledge and abilities would be :

    COLTON INTERNAL CANDIDATES :

    Education : High School diploma or equivalent.

    Experience : Three (3) years of municipal fire suppression experience, successful completion of one-half of the State Certified Fire Officer course requirements, or successful completion of three of the five core classes for an AS / AA degree in Fire Technology.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :

  • Possession of a valid California Class "C" license with Firefighter Endorsement issued by the California DMV and good driving record. Class A or B is highly desired.
  • Must possess a valid Emergency Medical Technician I Certificate.
  • Must possess valid CPR certifications.
  • Possession of a City of Colton Fire Department Engineer certification or equivalent.
  • EXTERNAL CANDIDATES :

    Education : High school diploma or equivalent.

    Experience : Three (3) years of full-time employment at a city, district, state, tribal, or federal fire agency, serving at least 1 year in the capacity of a Fire Engineer or 1 year in the capacity of Lieutenant. Candidate must be currently employed.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :

  • Possession of a valid California Class "C" license with Firefighter Endorsement issued by the California DMV and good driving record. Class A or B is highly desired.
  • Must have Emergency Medical Technician I Certificate.
  • Must possess CPR certifications.
  • Possession of a City of Colton Fire Department Engineer certification or equivalent within one year of appointment.
  • NOTE : Candidates with out-of-state EMT certification must obtain State of California EMT certification at the time of hire.

    Knowledge of :

    Complex principles, practices and procedures of modern firefighting and the operation and general maintenance of fire fighting vehicles, equipment and apparatus; purposes and uses of a variety of vehicles, equipment, tools, and apparatus used in firefighting, rescue, and medical assistance operations; vehicle safety laws for operation of Class B vehicles on the roadway; principles of mechanics, hydraulics, and mathematics as related to Fire Engineer duties; occupational hazards and standard safety practices; methods and techniques for record keeping; proper English, spelling and grammar.

    Ability to :

    Effectively and safely drive and operate the full range of fire apparatus and equipment used by the Department; perform field calculations of hydraulics for the proper and effective operations of equipment at emergency scenes; demonstrate physical endurance, agility, strength, and stamina in the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions; think and act quickly with good judgment in emergencies; work a variety of shifts including weekends, holidays, and emergency call-back; understand and follow oral directions promptly and accurately; work independently; establish and maintain effective working relationships.

    Skill to :

    Drive all trucks and vehicles used in firefighting, rescue, and medical assistance operations; operate all apparatus, equipment, tools, devices, and facilities used in these operations; use modern firefighting methods; and perform advanced first aid and CPR.

    Why this job may be for you : Accelerated Engineer Testing : Probationary testing is completed at six months upon successfully passing all tests; completion of probation at 12 months. Candidates without direct structural firefighting experience must complete a 12-month probationary testing process.

    Vacation Accrual : Vacation accrual rate based on fire service tenure.

    Holiday Hours : Annually, Colton Firefighters receive 192 hours of holiday leave in addition to annually accrued vacation time; vacation accrual rates between 168-280 hours annually for shift employees based on tenure. Holiday leave can be taken as time off or cashed out as payment.

    Compensation : In addition to normal salary, the following compensation is provided to qualified Colton Firefighters : paramedic incentive, longevity pay (based on fire service tenure), bilingual pay, special certification pay, special assignment pay for arson investigators, paramedic recertification pay, educational incentive, and annual tuition reimbursement of up to $2,500.

    Work Schedule : A 48-hour-on and 96-hour-off schedule allows for much-needed family and decompression time away from work.

    Positions designated in the Colton Fire Fighters Association receive the following benefits :

  • Cafeteria amount for the purchase of medical, dental, and vision insurance is$1,625.00 / mo effective August, 2024
  • Employees hired on or after January 1, 2018, shall have a maximum cap of $500 for cash in-lieu or for the difference between the medical insurance premium and the cafeteria dollar amount.
  • Up to 160 hours per year of vacation accrued for 0 - 5 years of service for Shift personnel; up to 120 hours per year of vacation accrued for 0 - 5 years of service for Non-Shift personnel.
  • Up to 144 hours of sick leave (12 hours accrued monthly) for Shift personnel; up to 96 hours of sick leave (8 hours accrued monthly) for Non-Shift personnel.
  • 192 hours holiday credit (per fiscal year) for Shift personnel.
  • 12 Holidays off plus 12 hours floating holiday for Non-Shift personnel.
  • California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) for Fire Safety :
  • Classic Members hired prior to 10 / 15 / 2011 benefit level is 3% @ 50

    Classic Members hired after 10 / 15 / 2011 benefit level is 3% @ 55

    PEPRA Members hired after 1 / 1 / 2013 benefit level is 2.7% @ 57

  • Post-Retirement Survivor Allowance

  • Uniform Allowance - $75 per month per fiscal year.
  • Longevity pay : $100 / mo for 15 years, $200 / mo for 20 years, $300 / mo for 25 years, including previous fire experience in a similar position (non-cumulative)

  • Fire Arson Investigator pay $150 / mo
  • Captain training pay $400 / mo
