  • This recruitment is exclusively for current City of Loma Linda employees.

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, operates and maintains fire apparatus during emergency and routine situations, operates fire pumps, aerial apparatus and other fire equipment or specialized tools; assists in fire suppression, emergency medical care and public assistance; performs fire prevention inspections, assists in fire investigation, public education, and public relations assignments; participates in maintenance and record keeping activities; performs such other duties as may be assigned.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

The Fire Engineer is a career position and is directly responsible to the Shift Captain. The Engineer may, on occasion, or by direction, supervise subordinate members; may serve as an officer in the absence of the Shift Captain or serve as the leader in command of a unit or detail.

Examples of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following :

1. Drives, operates and maintains Fire Department apparatus.

2. Operates and maintains Fire Department tools and equipment.

3. Participates in fire company activities including fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical care, public assistance, fire company training, fire prevention and pre-fire planning inspections, public education fire safety inspection activity, and in the testing of fire hose and fire hydrants.

4. Conducts basic fire training; participates in training and fire drills; assists in the conduct of public education programs.

5. Prepares and maintains records of fire operations activity.

6. Serves as an Acting Shift Captain as needed and may supervise subordinate members.

7. Responds to calls when off duty.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and / or Experience

Any combination of education and / or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance. Example combinations include the equivalent to graduation from high school; twelve units of fire science, including fire hydraulics, fire apparatus and equipment, and fire prevention, or equivalent; and two years of experience in fire service.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of modern fire fighting methods; the operation of fire apparatus and hydraulics; fire safety inspection methods; routine apparatus maintenance and repair; laws, regulations, ordinances and procedures pertaining to traffic, parking, and animal control enforcement. Working knowledge of basic record keeping methods. Ability to operate fire apparatus; perform, and instruct others in fire fighting and inspection tasks; prepare and maintain records and reports; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Special Requirements

Completion of the Loma Linda Fire Department Apparatus Operator Taskbook.

Possession of or ability to obtain certification as a Driver Operator in the State of California.

Possession of a valid California FF Endorsement driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.

Incumbents must pass a medical examination at time of appointment, including drug screen; and must be eligible for membership in the Public Employees' Retirement System as a safety member.

Incumbents must be citizens of the United States.

Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain Emergency Medical Technician certification.

Incumbents must refrain from smoking tobacco either on or off duty.

Working Conditions

Work may expose incumbents to toxic or otherwise irritating substances and / or chemicals; incumbents must be able to perform heavy manual labor and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Paydays : Biweekly on Thursdays

Floating Holiday : Two (2) floating holiday per fiscal year.

Sick Leave : Ten (10) hours for each full calendar month of continuous service.

Life Insurance : The City provides 100% of premiums for employee term life and AD&D

coverage equal to one times the member's annual salary, up to a maximum of $150,000.

Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance : Effective January 1, 2025, the City provides $2,100.00 monthly allotment for medical, dental, and vision insurance. The remainder of unexpended money can be placed in deferred compensation or taken as cash on the employee's paycheck.
