TITLE: Police Officer-Entry Level
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Police Officer performs work involving the protection of life and property, the enforcement of laws and ordinances, the maintenance of order, and the investigation of crimes. Police Officers appear in court to present evidence and testify accordingly. The officer may perform specialized duties depending upon the individual officer’s background, abilities and the needs of the department.
REPORTS TO: Police Sergeant
SUPERVISES: None
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
· Patrol within the City of Colville in a radio equipped automobile to investigate, deter, and/or discover violations of criminal and vehicle traffic laws and/or ordinances.
· Respond to calls, complaints or reports of actual, possible or potential occurrence of criminal activity.
· Administer immediate assistance to citizens in critical and/or emergency situations where the protection of lives and/or property may be endangered.
· Secure and control crime scenes and administer aid, gather evidence and witness statements as necessary and/or mandated and arrest suspect(s).
· Creates detailed written reports.
· Engage in specialized investigative assignments as directed.
· Appear in court to present evidence and testify against persons accused of an unlawful act.
· Maintain surveillance over suspected criminals.
· Participate in intermediate or advanced training classes in law enforcement methodology, first aid, regular or special weapons/tactics procedures and related subjects.
· Performs related work as required.
All work activities shall be conducted in compliance with the safety and accident prevention plan.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. All employees are responsible for maintaining the Department of Labor & Industries standards for safety practices in the performance of the job. Must also have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
· 21 years old at time of appointment;
· Good physical, vision, hearing, and medical/mental condition. Pre-employment medical and health examination in accordance with the Washington State Law Enforcement Medical Physical Standards manual;
· Good character. Candidates shall submit to a thorough employment reference and background investigation, and submission for an FBI record check, including psychological and polygraph examinations. Controlled substance use may be grounds for rejection of application;
· Ability to exercise reasonable judgement under stress;
· Ability/willingness to work variable shifts of up to twelve (12) hours duration including nights, weekends, and legal holidays;
· Ability/willingness to maintain physical agility required to deal effectively with critical emergency situations;
· Satisfactorily complete one (1) year probationary period.
· Experience with computer/word processing system, preferably with Microsoft Word and Excel spreadsheets.
CITIZENSHIP:
· Is a citizen of the United States of America.
RECORD:
· No felony conviction(s) under the laws of this state, or any other state;
· No conviction(s) of a gross misdemeanor or any crime involving moral turpitude;
· If previously or still in the military service, must have received an honorable discharge unless still on active duty;
· Possession of a valid Washington State motor vehicle operators license; has a driving record free from criminal convictions or frequent traffic infractions.
EDUCATION:
· High school diploma or general education degree (GED);
· If not already obtained, enrolled in the Washington State Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy within six (6) months after appointment. Completion of the academy is required to retain employment.

· While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle objects or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to be able to talk and hear. May be required to stoop or crouch to pick up items.
· Must meet or exceed Washington State Law Enforcement Medical and Physical standards.
· The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 150 pounds.
· Vision must be at least 20/40 and 20/60 uncorrected, correctable to 20/20 and 20/30. Other vision abilities required by this position include close vision, normal color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
