We are looking for a talented Senior IT Engineer to join our vibrant and inclusive IT department to support the critical technology needs of the Commerce City Police Department. In this role, you will be a key player in maintaining a secure and reliable technology environment that empowers our police force to serve and protect our community.
What You'll Do:
- As one of the go-to tech experts for the Police Department, you will ensure the smooth operation of all public safety servers, network equipment, software, computers, mobile devices, and overall infrastructure while adhering to CJIS requirements.
- Embrace the challenge of installing, configuring, and troubleshooting our public safety network, including our in-car routers with multiple LTE connections.
- Upgrade server and network hardware and software components to stay ahead of the curve and ensure our systems are always cutting-edge.
- Flex your project management muscles by providing design, planning, and implementation support for Police Department IT projects.
- Be a tech guru by evaluating, recommending, and training users on the latest and greatest public safety technology systems and applications.
- Teamwork is key! You'll collaborate with local, state, and federal agencies to ensure seamless data exchange configurations and connectivity.
- Partner with our IT Business Analysts to review and evaluate equipment and software alternatives, always keeping security standards and procurement policy top of mind.
- Become a security champion! You will establish, support, and continuously improve enterprise security by researching, recommending, and implementing best practices. You will also act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and raise CJIS awareness among all PD end-users.
- Stay vigilant! You'll review and coordinate changes to the CJIS Incident Response Plan annually and work closely with other IT teams to address security requirements for all CJIS systems.
- Be on the front line in identifying, containing, and remediating end-user related security incidents, such as viruses and credential compromises.
- Contribute to the big picture by assisting in the preparation of bid specifications, requests for proposals, and requests for information.
- Be a part of the action by participating in table-top exercises and other drills to test our incident response capabilities.
- We're a 24/7 operation! Be ready to provide on-call after-hours support when needed.
What We're Looking For:
- A passion for technology and a commitment to providing outstanding support.
- Five to seven years of hands-on experience in system/network administration and support.
- A strong understanding of security best practices and a desire to champion a secure IT environment, maintaining acute attention to detail and confidentiality.
- Expertise in Windows servers, networking, and hardened computer support for applications and mobile devices.
- Bonus points for certifications in Microsoft Server, Cisco Networking, and ITIL Foundations.
- CJIS certification is a must (or the ability to obtain it within 30 days of joining our team).

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Information Systems is preferred. At least five to seven years of system/network administration and support experience is required. Prior experience in Security of Information Systems strongly preferred. Experience and training in Windows Servers, Networking, Application and Mobile hardened computer support required. Certifications in Microsoft Server and Cisco Networking preferred. Experience and training in ITIL with ITIL Foundations Certification preferred. CJIS certified or ability to obtain certification within 30 days of employment. Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of managing end to end support on enterprise applications, servers, desktop, laptop, cameras, and mobile devices
- Working knowledge of LTE routers including Cradle Point
- Strong knowledge of industry security standards and best practices including NIST 800-53
- Knowledge of the theory, principles, practices, and methods of management and administration of information systems, including systems analysis, design, construction, monitoring, maintenance, testing, documentation, training, and production support
- Knowledge of security technologies including firewalls, proxies, SIEM, antivirus, and IDPs
- Knowledge of network and cabling theory and applications.
- Knowledge of network protocols, architecture and system design
- Knowledge of penetration testing, network security, and the techniques used to expose and correct security flaws
- Knowledge of current Microsoft Server operating systems and server hardware
- Knowledge of enterprise server virtualization – VMWare preferred
- Knowledge of enterprise storage and backup technology – Veeam preferred
- Knowledge of Disaster Recovery methodology, daily operations, and recovery considerations
- Knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory, SAML SSO, and Office365 system administration
- Knowledge of Cisco switch, routing, firewalls, wireless, and access/identity
- Knowledge of Security Awareness Training and Phishing Campaign applications
- Knowledge of Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager, and WSUS
- Knowledge of SQL server including queries and data migrations
- Strong problem-solving, verbal, and written communication skills
- Strong customer advocacy and customer relationship skills
- Ability to research new technologies and provide recommendations based on security
- Ability to explain technical terminology to non-technical end users.
- Ability to identify and spotlight vulnerabilities on on-premises and remote networks and recommend remediation steps
- Ability to think critically and innovatively about security solutions
