Under the direction of the City Engineer, the Engineering Intern performs entry level technical engineering work in office and field settings. This position assists the Engineering Division with tasks related to preliminary design, construction staking and inspection of City streets and utilities, traffic data collection and assistance with miscellaneous City construction projects.
Candidates need to be a student in a Civil Engineering, Surveying, Mapping Sciences, or related program; have a working knowledge of maps, construction plans and procedures, materials and use of survey equipment. Equipment used includes AutoCAD, GIS software and equipment, robotic total station, auto level, and tape measure. Starting wage is $17-$19.00 per hour, DOQ. - Assists Surveyor with City road construction program.
- Assists Surveyor with field topography surveys & construction staking for various street and municipal improvement projects.
- Maintains proper communication with contractors and the general public, to effectively describe the nature of the project, expectations and responsibilities.
- Assists Senior Engineering Technicians in the measurement and documentation of construction contract quantities.
- Performs data collection using Total Station and GPS equipment.
- Follows oral and written instructions such as supervisor's work orders and equipment operation manuals.
- Regular and reliable attendance during scheduled work hours and outside regular hours as necessary.
- Performs other related functions as apparent or delegated.

- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, contract documents, technical manuals, legal descriptions, deeds, easements, written reports and correspondence.
- Ability to be detail oriented and follow through with tasks.
- Ability to maintain a team and service oriented approach to work.
- Student in a Civil Engineering, Surveying, Mapping Sciences, or related post-secondary program.
- Ability to communicate effectively, verbally, orally, in writing, and electronically.
- Ability to work independently.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Construction experience, GIS software, and/or surveying experience, including use of robotic total station and GPS equipment, and AutoCAD proficiency and/or knowledge.

EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Duties performed will include outside work in climatic weather. A portion of this work is in a typical office environment. It will use common office supplies and equipment, and the noise level in the office is usually quiet. Exposure to computer monitors in the office is typical. This position works closely with others. Travel to various utility sites within the City is required. Noise level in the field environment can be loud. In the field, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and can be subject to vibration, odors, and dust.
