We’re looking for a motivated Engineering Intern to join our team and gain hands-on experience working on real-world projects. This is a great opportunity to build your skills, collaborate with experienced professionals, and make a meaningful impact. Under the direction of the City Engineer, the Engineering Intern performs entry level technical engineering work in office and field settings. This position assists the Engineering Division with tasks related to preliminary design, right of way permitting, construction staking and inspection of City streets and utilities, traffic data collection and assistance with miscellaneous City construction projects.

Hiring rate: $17.00 - $19.00/hour

PUBLIC RIGHT-OF-WAY AND UTILITY WORK INSPECTION AND REVIEW:
  • Assists with permit processing and plan review to ensure City standards are adhered to.
  • Manages and verifies permit start and completion dates.
  • Assists with verifying private utility construction aligns with approved plans.
  • Inspects permitted work for accuracy and completeness, including proper restoration of city infrastructure and turf.
  • Prepares routine documents, forms, and reports related to inspection and verification of work performed.
  • Responds to public inquiries regarding private utility work in the right-of-way.
ENGINEERING SUPPORT:
  • Assists in entry-level civil engineering work related to design, construction & maintenance of City infrastructure.
  • Assists with inspections and construction staking of City roadway and utility improvement projects.
  • Assists with calculating construction quantities for engineering projects.
  • Assists in the collection of traffic data for volume and speed.
  • Assists with data inventory for the City's storm sewer system using GIS mapping programs.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with City personnel, external vendors, and the public.
  • Ability to perform duties with tact, diplomacy, and discretion.
  • Ability to be detail oriented and follow through with tasks.
  • Ability to maintain a team and service oriented approach to work.
  • Must have the ability to accept criticism or discipline.
  • Must strive to promote a cooperative atmosphere in the department and exhibit a positive attitude.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Student in a Civil Engineering, Surveying, Mapping Sciences, or related post-secondary program.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally, orally, in writing, and electronically.
  • Ability to work independently.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Construction experience on public infrastructure projects.
  • Ability to read construction plans and documents.
  • GIS software and/or surveying experience, including use of robotic total station and GPS equipment.
  • AutoCAD proficiency and/or knowledge.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds and use of small hand tools; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word;  hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, keyboards, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work has exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
