Salary Range: $33.39 - $39.29

  • Diagnoses problems, performs tune up and services automobiles, light and heavy trucks, specialized turf and pavement equipment, gasoline and diesel engines, and two and four cycle small engines.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs and services carburetors, fuel injection systems, alternators, starters, water pumps, clutch and brakes (both hydraulic and air).
  • Diagnoses and repairs heavy off road equipment.
  • Diagnoses and services electrical and electronic systems.
  • Operates both gas and arc welder.
  • Diagnoses air conditioning system problems.
  • Completes vehicle preventive maintenance and State DOT inspections.
  • Operates City vehicles (including those requiring a valid class B driver's license with tank and air brake endorsements) and equipment to perform testing, servicing, and deliveries as required.
  • Operates desktop and laptop computers for entry of work orders, parts receipts and other maintenance records.
  • Maintains positive professional working relationships with all staff levels, other jurisdictions and outside agencies, and the general public.
  • Performs essential position duties and responsibilities under the working conditions and physical demands described herein.
  • Maintain attendance during regularly scheduled work hours and outside regular hours as necessary.
  • Effective and respectful communication and interactions with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and citizen customers.
  • Performs other related functions as apparent or delegated.

Advanced knowledge of:
  • Electrical and electronic systems. 
Experience in:
  • Welding, sheet metal work, small engine repair, and use of electronic tune-up equipment.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT
The Mechanic position requires an employee to supply the following tools:
  • 1/4" drive socket set, 1 shallow and 1 deep – 3/16" to 1/2" at 1/32" intervals and metric 8 mm to 13 mm at 1 mm intervals.
  • 3/8" drive socket set, 1 shallow and 1 deep – 3/8" to 1" at 1/16" intervals and metric from 10 mm to 19mm at 1 mm intervals.
  • 1/2" drive socket set, 1 shallow and 1 deep (deep impact or standard) – 3/8" to 1" at 1/16" intervals and metric from 13 mm to 24 mm at 1 mm intervals.
  • Open end wrench – 3/8" to 1" at 1/16" intervals and 8 mm to 19 mm at 1 mm intervals.
  • Box end wrench set – 3/8" to 1" at 1/16" intervals and 8 mm to 19 mm at 1 mm intervals.
  • 1/2" drive deep impact sockets – 3/8" to 1" at 1/16" intervals and 13 mm to 22 mm at 1 mm intervals.
  • Torx bits and driver set.
  • Assorted screwdrivers, pliers, hammers, chisels, files, pry bars, air hammer, 1/2" drive impact wrench, drill, crescent wrenches, allen wrenches, multimeter, test light, ratchets, scrapers, 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" drive extensions, and all other small tools necessary to perform Mechanic's duties.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
A combination of training and experience substantially equivalent to the following:
  • Associate's or Technical degree in auto/truck repair.
  • One year on-the-job experience in the automotive/truck or heavy equipment field.
  • Valid Minnesota Vehicle Inspector certification or the ability to obtain within six months.
  • Valid Class B driver's license including tanker and air brake endorsement with a clean driving record, or the ability to obtain within six months.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to maintain a team and service oriented approach to work essential. 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and lifting, frequently requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, nigh vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, vision inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives, exposure to vibration and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
 
EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION:
This position may work outside from time to time or be exposed to inclement weather conditions, including temperature shifts and wet and/or humid conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and may be exposed to vapors, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The position works closely with others.The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
 
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Must comply with organizational and departmental policies.
  • Must possess a valid State of Minnesota vehicle inspection certificate within six months.
  • Must possess a valid Class B Commercial driver's license, including tanker and air brake endorsements, with a clean driving record.
