This is an entry level position in the Parks Division working under the general supervision of the Parks Supervisor. Responsibilities include maintenance duties of a laboring nature.

Work Schedule is primarily Monday-Friday 6:30 am - 2:30 pm with the availability to respond to weather related emergency.


Hiring rate: $30.12/hour
Salary range for this position: $30.12 - $36.57/hour.

  • Performs work of laboring nature including but not limited to frequent lifting, shoveling, operating light equipment and/or heavy equipment or manual labor.
  • Performs duties associated with snow plowing, by plowing streets, alleys parking lots, ice rinks and skating areas using light and/or heavy equipment.
  • Operates vehicles, requiring a valid class B driver's license including tanker and air brake endorsement.
  • Prepares ball fields for league play such as dragging, painting & laying out fields using light and/or heavy equipment or manual labor.
  • Constructs and maintains trails using light and/or heavy equipment.
  • Maintains turf by mowing, seeding, raking, laying sod, cleaning debris, etc.
  • Mows/Aerates lawns, street boarders, fields, ditches, using heavy and/or light equipment.
  • Plants and maintains trees and/or shrubs.
  • Maintains ice rinks by shoveling, clearing snow, fixing hockey boards, etc.
  • Maintains playground equipment by painting, repairing, replacing parts etc.
  • Performs routine maintenance on equipment and facilities by painting, cleaning, fixing, etc.
  • Performs strenuous manual labor in extreme climatic conditions including but not limited to lifting and digging.
  • Follows oral and written instructions such as supervisor's work orders and equipment operation manuals.
  • Estimates quantities of materials such as amount of lime required to mark a ball field or the number of loads of sod to complete a project.
  • Attendance during regularly scheduled work hours and outside regular hours as necessary.
  • Performs other related functions as apparent or delegated.

Practical knowledge of:
  • Principles, practices, and methods including tools and equipment used in park maintenance.
  • City equipment, repair techniques and preventative utility maintenance requirements as well as their capabilities and limitations.
  • General carpentry.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A combination of training and experience substantially equivalent to the following:
  • Technical degree or certificate in related field required.
  • Completed park related coursework (such as horticulture, landscaping design, park administration, etc.) or two years park related experience may be substituted for a technical degree.
  • Valid class B driver's license including tanker and air brake endorsement, or the ability to obtain within 6 months is required. 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions.
 
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; speak intelligibly and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk and reach, kneel, bend over, push and carry objects with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
 
EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  Duties performed are usually outside and in climatic extremes.
 
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Must comply with organizational and departmental policies.
  • Must possess a valid Class B driver's license including tanker and air brake endorsements.
