The Opportunity

Lead, Empower, and Inspire as Coppell's Assistant Director of Strategic Financial Engagement!

As the Assistant Director of Strategic Financial Engagement, you'll work closely with the Director of SFE to support and advance key financial initiatives. You'll lead and empower the talented teams responsible for Accounting, Payroll, Procurement, Utility Billing, and Budget operations, ensuring professional growth and operational excellence across the department.

In this role, you'll oversee critical tasks such as supporting the preparation of the ACFR, Five-Year Forecast, and annual audit, while ensuring compliance with policies, standards, and legislative requirements. You'll collaborate with City leadership, provide key insights, and implement strategies to streamline processes, improve efficiency, and drive organizational success.

Schedule Commitment

Regular attendance is an essential job function, and the Assistant Director generally works an 8 : 00-5 : 00 schedule, Monday-Friday, with additional hours weekly as required for various work seasons, meetings, special events, or other activities which may require evening and weekend hours.

Pay Plan

This opportunity is exempt and on Pay Grade #26. The full Pay Grade Range is shown for growth and development opportunities within the grade. Salary determination is supported by budget availability and qualifications of the candidate to maintain internal equity.

Hiring Range : $110,744-$135,640

Min $110,744 ($53.24)

Mid $135,640 ($65.21)

Max $160,560 ($77.19)

  • January 31 - March 2 : Application period.
  • March 3 - 7 : Selected candidates will be invited to participate in a telephone interview with our third-party partner, The Management Connection.
  • March 24 - 28 : Finalists will be invited to complete a DISC Assessment with our third-party partner, The Management Connection.
  • March 31 - April 4 : Coordination of the interview experience.
  • April 7 - 11 : Interview experience takes place.

Eligibility

Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field; a master's degree in these fields is preferred.
  • 5 years of progressively responsible experience leading, supervising, and managing individuals and teams, with demonstrated success in team development, including fostering cross-functional collaboration, cohesion, and cross-training.
  • Experience working in a municipal government or public agency finance department is required; familiarity with local government operations such as utility billing, budgeting, payroll, accounts payable, and procurement is preferred.
  • Strong proficiency in governmental accounting and financial topics is required; certifications such as GFOA of Texas CGFO, Certified Public Finance Officer (CPFO) through GFOA, or CGFM through the Association of Government Accountants are preferred.
  • Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

    Knowledge

  • Strong proficiency in governmental accounting and knowledge of Governmental Accounting Standards issued by GASB.
  • Strong proficiency in governmental accounting and financial topics.
  • Knowledge of municipal budgeting and long-term financial planning, including capital project planning.
  • Knowledge of statistical and financial analysis techniques.
  • Familiarity with GASB statements and the ability to guide the Accounting Manager in implementing standards.
  • Skills

  • Strong analytical skills, including data analysis and the ability to report data and information accurately, effectively, and without bias.
  • Skilled at communicating the story behind data, making complex information accessible and relatable.
  • Proficient in verbal and written communication with diverse audiences, including City officials, staff members, vendors, contractors, and the public, through presentations, letters, agenda items, ordinances, and policies.
  • Skilled at personnel management, including the hiring process (screening, selection, and onboarding), training, career development, coaching, recognition, performance management, conflict resolution, and human relations.
  • Proficient in task delegation, assignment, and creating accountability systems.
  • Abilities

  • Ability to work as a self-starter and effectively function both independently and in group settings, even in the absence of specific instructions.
  • Ability to lead at all levels of the organization and ensure timely and accurate delivery of department information, including utility bills, financial reports, and budgetary data.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, oversee, direct, review, and analyze tasks performed by others, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, including supervisory tasks, under time pressures and in situations requiring irregular scheduling or overtime.
  • Ability to handle tedious, exacting work while frequently changing tasks and managing time pressures effectively.
  • Capable of assessing unexpected situations and devising and implementing appropriate responses.
  • Possesses strong organizational and time management abilities to plan and prioritize tasks effectively.
