Performs emergency work in the treatment of emergency medical problems including providing and delivering skilled, specialized emergency medical treatment to citizens, emergency rescue, fire inspections, fire education and preplans, and performs emergency work in the protection of life and property from fire and other hazards.

Employees with a Bachelor's degree receive 1.5% above their hourly wage and employees with a Master's degree receive 3.0% above their hourly wage. 
  1. Maintain medical knowledge and skill as established by medical directors and perform as paramedic.
  2. Drive ambulance or acts as attendant while responding to routine and emergency situations involving ill or injured individuals.
  3. Maintain public safety, fire, medical certification, rescue and medical related skills, including physical conditioning, knowledge of laws, ordinances and codes, and proficiency in all Division equipment.
  4. Respond to alarms with fire company; enter building with hose and operate nozzles; operate booster lines, hand fire extinguishers and related equipment;  raise, lower and climb ladders and ventilate burning buildings; remove persons from danger, provide emergency first aid to victims; operate aerial ladder pumper, rescue vehicles and other related equipment.
  5. Participate in regular and special inspections of commercial and public buildings, looking for fire hazards and other related public safety hazards; noting the location of sprinkling systems, ponds, sources of emergency water supply, evacuation routes and general layouts of building; check water supply systems and hydrants for flow and pressure.
  6. Participate in prevention duties as apparent or assigned; conduct or assist in School Fire Prevention Programs; provide training to the community in the elimination of fire safety hazards, evacuation procedures and the use of fire extinguishers.
  7. Maintain and improve rescue and firefighting skills. Attend training sessions, study material on fire hazards, firefighting and rescue methods. Maintain familiarity with City streets and all department equipment.   Assist and/or conduct training sessions for part-time firefighters as assigned; and assist in conducting fire drills at school and other public buildings as apparent or directed.
  8. Perform salvage operation at the scene of Fire Division responses which may include the placing of canvas, removal of excess water, shoveling out debris, patching windows and holes and performing other clean-up duties as apparent or directed.
  9. Perform regular and/or special inspections of industrial, commercial, public, multiple dwelling or residential buildings as assigned to enforce all related ordinances, codes and state and federal laws.
  10. Maintain assigned vehicles and equipment which includes refueling, refilling water tanks, recharging air tanks and extinguishers, assists in the movement of vehicles for repair, washing vehicles and related equipment, minor preventative maintenance, grease, oil, filters, fluid levels, etc.,;   washing, drying and reloading hoses and other work needed to return vehicles and equipment to ready status.
  11. Inspect, maintain and repair, as necessary, all other fire related equipment, complete required checklists and report damages and improperly functioning equipment.
  12. Maintain, facilitate and perform housekeeping duties which include building and ground maintenance, sweeping and washing floors and walls, cleaning living areas and performing minor repairs as needed or directed.
  13. Operate communications and related equipment and perform other related duties; keep required records both manual and automated; and routinely make out reports.
  14. Perform all other duties and assume all other responsibilities as apparent, delegated or assigned.
  1. Nationally Registered Paramedic certification, or eligible for certification by appointment date and certification trough the Minnesota EMSRB, or eligible for certification by the appointment date. (both are required) 
  2. Firefighter 1 and 2 and Hazardous Materials Operations certification accredited by Pro Board, IFSAC or Minnesota Fire Service Certification Board (MFSCB) within 365 days of appointment date. 
  3. Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  4. Non-smoker.
Preferred qualifications

  1. Minnesota Firefighter license or ability to obtain within 365 days of appointment date.
  2. One year of full-time equivalent Paramedic experience
  3. One year of full-time equivalent Firefighter experience
  4. FAO-Engine/Pumper certification accredited by Pro Board, IFSAC or MFSCB
  5. Fire Officer 1 certification accredited by Pro Board, IFSAC or MFSCB
  6. Fire instructor 1 certification accredited by Pro Board, IFSAC or MFSCB
  7. Fire Inspector 1 certification accredited by Pro Board, IFSAC or MFSCB
  8. Blue Card certification 
  9. Hazardous Materials Operations (472/1072) certification accredited by Pro Board, IFSAC or MFSCB
  10. Experience with advanced EMS skills (point of care ultrasound, video laryngoscopy, expanded medication guidelines)  
FIREFIGHTER DUTIES (NSAs)
 
  1. Need to have excellent driving skills
  2. Be able to step up into/on truck with a maximum height of 30"
  3. Be able to reach up to the maximum of 88" and 36" deep
  4. Be able to climb up the back and on the top of the fire truck and balance self along a 15" span
  5. Be able to climb several flights of stairs, 35' to 45' ladders
  6. Be able to balance self while handling weighted equipment in a burning and smoke filled structure
  7. Be able to lift or carry equipment from floor to overhead
  8. Be able to kneel/crouch balanced without support
  9. Be able to crawl about on hands and knees with weight on your back
  10. Be able to push/pull objects using total body movements (forces up to 18 pounds required for basic equipment) 
  11. Be able to walk long distances (over 100 yards at one time)
  12. Need good grip strength with gloves to handle tools requiring torquing, pounding, and jerky motions with hands
  13. Handle equipment, injured people and gauges
  14. Be able to move around with 55 pounds weighted gear and a variety of weighted equipment or an injured person
  15. Have general mechanical ability/knowledge of engines
  16. Need good visual acuity to read gauges
  17. Need good auditory and comprehension skills to follow directions
  18. Need quick reflexes
  19. Not be claustrophobic or have a fear of heights or cramped quarters
  20. Maintenance of grounds which includes, but is not limited to, shoveling, snowblowing, and watering
  21. Be able to work under stress/pressure
 
PARAMEDIC DUTIES (NSAs)
 
  1. Need to have excellent driving skills
  2. Be able to step up onto the first step 23 1/2" into vehicle
  3. Need to be able to balance self while in moving vehicle from a crouched or standing position (maximum ceiling height 5' 6")
  4. Need to have good auditory skills to understand the radio unit, hear heart beat with stethoscope while sirens are on 
  5. Need good verbal skills to relay information
  6. Need good hand strength to handle a variety of weighted equipment and people
  7. Need good dexterity and eyesight to administer IV drugs
  8. Need good tactile sensation for heart rate palpation and other medical services
  9. Be able to assist in caring and lifting a stretcher with a person
  10. Be cardiovascularly fit for rapid stair climbing and other situational needs
  11. Work well under stress
  12. Able to reach into cabinets up to 50 1/2" high and 21" deep
  13. Good balance
