What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Parks and Recreation position at City of Cripple Creek?
The City of Cripple Creek occupies approximately 1.5 square miles on the southwestern slope of Pikes Peak in Colorado's majestic Rocky Mountains. Sitting at 9,494 feet above sea level, the City is located only forty-four scenic miles southwest of the City of Colorado Springs.
The successful candidate will succeed our long-time director, whose service with the City will conclude at the end of May in 2025 with her retirement. The department consists of 5 full-time employees and 2 part-time employees. The Director's direct subordinates are a Recreation Facility Manager and Recreation Program Manager who oversee the daily operations and supervision of other employees, volunteers and contracted instructors and coaches. The department oversees the parks and recreation facility, the attached park, playground, basketball court, skate park, greenhouse, picnic shelter and gazebo; 2-dimensional archery shooting range, BMX track; disc golf course; sledding hill; dog park; and two hiking/biking trails, including the Gold Camp Trail. Program offerings include youth and adult basketball and baseball/softball, youth soccer, adult cornhole and volleyball. Facility offerings include multiple classes, facility rentals, skating, birthday parties, and special events.
The City is seeking a professional person of character with a commitment to high ethical standards, transparency, and honesty; and proven management and leadership experience in parks and recreation including leading teams, writing and administering grants, and managing a budget responsibly. The successful candidate will be expected to work with other City departments and community stakeholders to bring the best affordable offerings to the citizens and visitors of the City. The Director will be a proven leader with the ability to build relationships and guide the department through the upcoming opportunities and potential challenges with a passion for community service. Other desired competencies and characteristics include knowledge of recreation programming and activities including pertinent laws and regulations; excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build and grow community engagement and collaborate with local organizations and other stakeholders. The Director will be tasked with the development and implementation of plans, policies and procedures.
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Parks and Recreation Administration, Leisure Service or a related field is preferred and five years of experience at a supervisory level. Other combinations of education and experience, which provide the skills required for the job, may be substituted for listed requirements.
