To assist public works maintenance personnel in maintenance activities for parks, facilities, water and sewer systems, storm water, city streets, and other seasonal functions.  Position is 40 hours/week, Monday - Friday, 7 am - 3:30 pm; there is some flexibility with this. Please ask for details if interested.

  • Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in assisting in the maintenance and operation of park buildings, grounds, open spaces, trails and parks. Responsibilities may include general duties such as painting, cleaning of buildings, picking up and removing litter and garbage, and handling recyclables.  
  • Performs manual landscaping functions such as mowing, weeding, weed whipping, sodding, sediment removal, mulching, planting, and recreational field maintenance.
  • Assists in setting up and taking down equipment for various programs and preparing facilities for recreational use.
  • Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in assisting in the maintenance and operation of storm water facilities including ponds, rain gardens, shorelines, stream banks, wetlands, flood control structures, and catch basins.
  • Assists with the street maintenance work including activities such as paving, patching, crack sealing, grading,  equipment maintenance, cleaning, signage,  weed removal, litter collection, and street light bulb replacement.
  • Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in assisting in the maintenance and operation of the water distribution system, and sanitary sewer system.  Responsibilities may include assisting with maintaining sewer lift stations and water pump station and assisting with construction and maintenance of manholes,  sewer mains, and water mains and related infrastructure.  Also may assist with water meter repair.  
  • Assists with tree, shrub and brush management including pruning, trimming, mulching, watering, tree and brush removal, stump treatment, and inventory using GPS equipment.
  • Assists in administering code enforcement for tall grass, brush, and firewood.
  • Operates and maintains light equipment such as (but not limited to) hand tools, walk behind push mowers, weed whips, and self-propelled mowers and sweepers, hand saws, push-type rototillers, pumps, sewer jet, VACTOR, cement mixer, and sewer rudder.
  • Performs work within OSHA regulations, city safety procedures and Employee Right-to-Know law regulations.
  • Performs duties on weekends, holidays and evenings as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Valid Minnesota driver's license.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be able to physically perform functions of the position including lifting or moving up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work work evenings, weekends and holidays as assigned. 
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
  • One year of previous experience working in a municipal public works department in the area of parks, utilities, streets or storm water maintenance.
  • One year of previous work experience with landscaping or tree pruning.
  • Competency working with GIS software and GPS equipment.
  • One year experience in light equipment operation.
  • One year experience with record keeping and working with spreadsheets.
  • Technical or trade school training related to position.
Communications:  Must have the ability to actively listen to others for understanding of their needs and situations; ability to read, speak and write English clearly. 
 
Decision Making:  Must act in a decisive manner, using good judgment.  Must be able to assess problems and situations, able to anticipate needs and evaluate alternatives.  Must have a knowledge of the utilization of appropriate resources and the willingness to initiate use of available resources, including a thorough knowledge of programs, facilities and their characteristics.  Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.  Ability to understand and work in a safe manner.  Must be able to read and understand labels and directions.
 
Interpersonal Relationships:  Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors and public.  Must exclude personal biases from work performance.  Must represent the organization to other agencies and citizens with a courteous, helpful, accurate and business-like attitude in all types of contact.
 
Professional Attitude:  Must be willing to operate and maintain all assigned equipment responsibly and safely, demonstrating maturity and respectfulness.  Must have commitment to the organization; willingness to take initiative; dependability; maturity in relationships with others; and self confidence. 
 
Quality of Work:  Must be able to produce high quality, accurate work.  Must be able to detect and correct errors.  Must be able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.  Must be able to utilize work time properly and productively.

Technical Knowledge:  Must have knowledge and ability to comprehend a variety of instructions to perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in assisting in the maintenance parks,  equipment, facilities, water and sewer systems, storm water, city streets and other seasonal functions.   Must have knowledge to operate and maintain such equipment as walk behind push mowers, weed whips, and hand tools.
